I am currently working as a Government Civilian in Germany. I took delivery today of my 2025 US Spec BMW X3. With Android Auto, most of the navigation functionality is replicated in the dash/HUD, however one thing that is not working that really gets to me is the sign recognition. As I understand it now, the maps are no longer a file in the car, but streamed from the personal eSIM. Naturally, the eSIM in the BMW App does not work here in Germany, as it only has the three US carriers, however something interesting happened: When I try to set up the eSIM in the car, it gives me a QR code to scan which actually routed me to the UK site, where I was directed toI could sign up for an Ubigi data only account. I did sign up for the account, and it said the eSIM was activated, but in the BMW its still at the initial screen after setting up personal eSIM. I looked on some other forums (should have noted the links) That you could have your car transferred from the US Connected Drive System to the German Connected Drive System, so that they could use EU providers. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? I know since iDrive 9 is still pretty new perhaps the code has not been cracked yet.... I appreciate any help that could be provided. The eSim you created is only for personal use like setting upa a WLAN hotspot for passengers.
The cars internal Connected drive data transfer is a eSim of the car in the TCU and has nothing to do with the personal eSim.

Ah okay I see, so essentially then if I can get converted over to connecteddrive.de, I should have no issues then, with no need really for the personal eSIM? Thank you for the reply!

So I wanted to recharge this to see if anyone had any more information that could help me. I have a US Spec X3 and currently living in Germany. I am registered on the US Connected Drive, so I can remote start, lock unlock with phone, etc. However, many of the options (driving assist, maps, data store, sign recognition), do not work here. When I drive across the german border, the maps and apps will work but still nothing else.
I know many things have been locked down for idrive 9. I guess my question is, would it be as simple as swapping out the US Telematics module for a like EU one, and then maybe having the idrive 9 reflashed to the EU version?
Quite frankly, I can live without the bells and whistles, but I do plan to live in Germany for the forseeable future, and if I can find a way to make it work, I will.

Thank you for the reply, I purchased the car from euler auto group in Kaiserslautern, and sadly they say there is nothing they can do... Im thinking it may take a little time for a solution to iron itself out. I heard that was an issue with Idrive 8.5 and they were able to fix it for US cars to work in europe. Thanks!

Has there been any progress on your issue. I am experiencing the same issue. I am still on the 11.2024 software version and i cannot update my software. BMW is not helpful, at all.

I took my 2025 X3M50 to two different dealerships to attempt to load Euro maps and sign recognition and get the software updated, in still on 11.2024.40. Both said it is not possible. I have been in contact with BMW USA and DE. And have made 0 progress. I see that a Software update last year allows your vehicle to recognize the BMW SIM dongle to allow for Wi-Fi access in your vehicle.
The catch 22 is that if you can’t update your software you can’t use the Wi-Fi. Very frustrating. I spent €200 yesterday in Regensburg to have the dealer tell me that there is nothing they can do. I’ve offered to pay for hardware/software, BMW says there is nothing they can do. I gave the US My BMW app and I can’t download any OTA updates even with a VPN. Very frustrating.

After a year of writing them someone was assigned my case and actually emailed me. I called him yesterday and he is looking into it for me. I'm not hopeful, but maybe if enough people write it will get the attention necessary to come up with a fix.

Well if the Op can't update his software and the car is under warranty and has any Ambient lighting, Carplay/Android Auto, etc. problems (or any recall, you pick), then go to whatever dealer and ask them to fix it for you by downloading the latest version and that's it.

I suggest you find a European mobile phone forum and ask if there are devices that can receive a local cellular or wi-fi transmission and then turn around and send it back out as a spoofed eSIM signal to a Euro SIM as if it is coming from the USA. Perhaps using a VPN as well. Your problem isn't with the car; it's with the cellular connection. And there are people out there who can help you with that.

BMW produced the 2026 version of the X3M50 and the problem has been resolved in that model. I have been told by BMW that it is the TCU that is creating the issue. If it works in the 2026 model I am thinking that software or hardware from BMW can resolve the issue. Ultimately, that is what I am trying to get after.
I have not been able find the specific difference between the 2025 and 2026 models. If someone can provide that info I would appreciate it.

I would guess that other german dealerships are not much interested in getting involved into the case as this might bring them in a position where they need to provide liability for the work they have done on a car the can't provide any warranty for and never got anything out of the sales contract.
I can undestand your frustration. But if I where in your position I would try to give the car back to the seller due to not acting like promised and having missing features which are essential to a modern car with lots of electronics.

The sales woman was surprised when no maps were installed. She had to talk to the service department which informed her of the new change for my vehicle. I did not learn that software updates were not possible until several months later, something that was not communicated to me at the time of purchase. I cannot understand why it works in the new model and not the 2025. I am just trying to understand that so that I can possibly swap out a part. I read on other forums that continued communication with BMW has lead to resolution of similar issues. A guy in the X5 forum had the same issue in his vehicle that he was able to resolve through communication with BMW.
Does it not seem strange that it works on the 2026 and not the 2025? I can't believe that BMW can't provide a fix.
