I don't have any answers. But I'll just say that it was weird for both me and my wife for the first few weeks. And we felt the same way.
But now we don't even notice it, and actually like it.
Same here. Both of our BMW's have the hug and after a short time neither of us notice it. I hadn't really thought about the hug for quite a while until checking out this thread.

Easy guys.. easy.. this has turned into something it doesn't need to be.

I GET the safety argument and not even saying they are wrong.

My wife might even get used to the "hug" but for personal and real reasons, the sudden synch makes her VERY uncomfortable. My 2024 M2 doesn't do this, as I have said, so good or bad the feature isn't always there regardless of the car.

So this doesn't have to be an argument over this, it's about the technology and that's it.

Try coding cpGleTr1LEnb to nicht_aktiv [00] to see if it does what you are looking for. If it does not disable the automatic tensioner or gives you persistent errors or warnings in iDrive, code it back to aktiv [01]. (Coding anything in the ACSM module will usually give you some kind of a warning that goes away after a few minutes or after shutting the ignition off and turning it back on. But if the warning continues to show up, you should code it back.)

If you do this, can you please report back to this thread about the outcome?

Yeah this. Hadn't considered that for ME, I'm most comfortable being belted in to where I can hardly breathe, but for some that might be claustrophobic, or worse.

It’s not like we’re talking about taking seatbelts out of the car or disabling the pretensioners that automatically pull back the belts in the event of a crash. We’re talking about a tug on the belt that hasn’t been proven to be necessary other than people theorizing that it is. Show me concrete evidence that it does anything and I will concede this point. Literally squirming around in your seat or turning your head to look over your shoulder puts slack into the belt. The car doesn’t automatically pull it back again when you do that. Come on, you’re totally reaching here.
Well, over the top and maybe too much melodrama, but if this is a safety thing (clearly it is not there for any other reason), it just seems it should stay there.

IF it feels too tight sometimes. I usually just pull it slightly away from my chest after it tightens....and it no longer feels as tight. Try that.

I really do wish it could be disabled since I recently had heart surgery and the shoulder belt lies right over the incision area. When I forget that it is going to happen until it's too late, it is not pleasant.

Earlier in this thread, the question was asked that if the "hug" was actually a safety device, why isn't it in the rear seats? Part of the answer related to front impact regulatory requirements applying to the front seat. Now, NHTSA is getting around to something as basic as the seatbelt reminder for the rear seat. More rear seat regulation may be likely in the future. This article is from Automotive News today, although the formatting was not preserved in the copy/paste:

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Transportation Department said it will require rear seat reminder systems to boost seatbelt use starting in late 2027 in a bid to reduce traffic crash deaths and injuries that have been rising in recent years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its final rule, issued Dec. 16., will also upgrade and expand current warnings for the driver and others in the front seats.

The final regulation comes more than a decade after Congress in 2012 directed the agency to consider mandating the systems for rear passengers.

NHTSA estimates the new rule will eventually prevent more than 500 injuries and save about 50 lives yearly.

I can 100% confirm that this WORKS!!!!

It takes ProTools in expert mode into the airbag module, but 100% works.

For those that want this "feature" turned off, this works.

With that done, don't let her think just fastening the seat belt latch plate into the buckle finishes the job. If the car is no longer cinching up the belt automatically, she should pull on the belt to remove all slack herself. There is more to read/watch online.

Picking up our new to us G01 on Monday and I would love to find a way to disable the auto-synch of the seatbelt. I don't mind it much but it drives my wife insane, and its her car.. so motivated to kill that.

I searched but didnt find anything immediately, and would love to turn this off, code off, unplug the motor or who knows what on day one.
