As a heads up to anyone whose warranty is expiring soon (UK).

I had let my warranty lapse by a couple of weeks and received a phone call from BMW Financial Services offering renewal at a significant discount.

The online quote for renewal was £562 but I was offered £422 fully comprehensive including roadside assistance, saving £140.

For anyone who's warranty is expiring it might be worth hanging on a few weeks or giving BMW a call on 0345 504 9535 to see if they can offer a discount.

Good to know.

My car will be 5 years in March. At the moment, just can't see me changing it..so will keep paying the BMW warranty for peace of mind.

If you can get it cheaper than usual, I'd definitely say go for it. When I bought my pre-owned G01, it came with BMW's used/approved one-year warranty which I extended when it ran out in December.

Last month, I noticed that the outside DRL/halo on the driver's side was dimmer than the other three. I brought it into my BMW dealer and they replaced the headlamp unit under warranty.

These are adaptive LED headlights which swivel and have the auto high beam features, etc. The dealer said that the cost of the unit and fitting would have been an eye-watering £2300 had I not had the warranty!

The tech in these cars makes replacement parts pretty expensive when things go bad, so I plan on keeping the warranty going until I move on to the next one.

I thought my 'Used' UK warranty had expired at the end of April 2022, but I was surprised to find out via a letter it'll expire 31st July 2022. Some mix up with warranty/breakdown registration when I bought the car meant it started 3 months late. Yes, I got a boot liner out of that and some expenses paid.

Anyhoo... my X3 is now 4.3 years old with 26K on the clock, yet BMW are willing to offer me a 1 year 'BMW Insured Comprehensive Warranty'. To make it more affordable I've selected a £250 excess and that has bought the total cost down to £339. Personally, I think that's pretty good, but still not 100% sure if I should pull the trigger. Is it worth waiting to see *if* BMW contact me with a discount after July 31st?

£339 is the cost of a decent tyre (if you don't shop around in the UK), so I guess I should just buy it :D

Thoughts?

Just do it for peace of mind.

That's why I pay for my X3 warranty.

Have always done extended warranty since being burnt with a blown turbo many years ago - BMW stood the parts as a goodwill gesture, but still cost a couple of thousand for the labour :o

Yeah it's a good plan to wait a bit to see if you're offered a discount - but keep it top of mind as it's easy to forget about these things, and you want to make sure that you've got something in place if you ever have the need for it.

I actually got the same deal as you've been offered when I renewed. So when my headlamp was replaced, I did have to pay the £250 excess - but if I didn't have the warranty in place, I'd have had to pay almost 10x that amount. So I was fine with that!

Just be aware if you pass the expiry date, the price can go up. It's in the T&Cs.

I'm not sure you can get a discount, I've just tried this year with no joy. No negotiation at all. Last year was different, as I was just over the 60k miles, where the rate changes. Was able to get another year at the pre 60k miles rate, with the comment, "you won't get it at the lower rate next year".

Is that with or without breakdown/recovery?
For peace of mind I would say do it.

£339 total cost, £250 excess, no breakdown. I'd already organised breakdown in April when I thought my BMW breakdown had expired

I guess when you factor in the costs of some of the expensive parts, the warranty/excess is cheap.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

The recovery / breakdown element of the warranty is the best element. Myself and my wife have had to use it and it was exemplary. Replacement car on the drive even before we she got home on one occasion.

Plus I think the cost is minimal.

Same here, the recovery/breakdown cover is pretty comprehensive for the additional cost. Hire cars, hotels, ongoing costs, recovery and returning car to home, etc., can soon mount up.

Unless the alternative aftermarket policies give the same cover, I do wonder the wisdom of going without, particularly if you only need to cover the warrantied vehicle.
