Edge is not recommended for our cars. It tells you to refer to your dealer on their website. However Mobil 1 0w-40 is recommened according to Mobil's website. (for a 335i n54)

South African BMW dealers use Castrol SLX "Professional Longtec" 5W-30 in the 135's, & Magnatec in all other non-M engines. This oil carries BMW Longlife-01 approval. Magnatec has no BMW-specific approvals
Castrol Edge 5W-40 carries BMW Longlife-98 approval in addition to VW & MB approvals. Whilst Longlife-01 is a later (and therefore I assume higher) spec approval, BMW seemed to be comfortable with this as an alternative. It is important to note that Castrol Edge must not be confused with Castrol Edge Sport, which is a cheaper oil and carries no BMW approvals. I have just performed an oil change at about 16 000 km's (10 000 miles), but can make no comment about the oil at this stage.
