Creaking Moonroof
Hi, car has done 5000 mile and the moonroof has started to creak....annoying !
I know its been mentioned on here, but has anyone had a dealer fix this problem ? It would be good to know before I book my car in to get looked at. Last edited by halfalife; 03-06-2013 at 02:54 PM.. |

yes there's a solution, applied a felt tape around plastic center piece where it would make contact with glass

Thanks for that. I have just found the thread, it seems quite a common problem.

But, I brought it in to the dealer anyway and they fixed it right the first time. It's a known issue and there's an internal documented troubleshooting process/fix. If you need, I can dig up my invoice tonight and see what it says. Mine is a 2013 with roughly 9000 km. |

I have attached some foam to the plastic to see if that fixes it, time will tell. |

Great info! If people could post such details from work orders, I think it would benefit all forum members to provide references when researching fixes for various problems.

I have this squeak / rattle. It is only noticeable with the sun shade open. When the car goes in for service I'll have them take a look. I think it will go away when it gets warmer out though, I'm not worried.

I've got it too at only 6500km. It does seem to get worse with the colder temperatures.
If someone could post any information about the official "fix", may make the service experience a bit better - going to take it in soon. Thanks!

In this thread:
http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=806891 FX3OK posted (on 02-Mar-2013): Also had them check clatter/rattle from center beam on sunroof. Cause: plastic divider hitting glass. Solution: felt tape on divider. Seems to have fixed rattle.

If true, this could be the real fix, as opposed to a felt tape workaround. Can you get details from your invoice or dealer service, specifically about the part number used? If not on the invoice, maybe the service dept would share the detail with you.

Creaking Sunroof noise sorted!
Had creaking noises from the sunroof when going over bumps and going
round corners. The noise was more apparent in cold weather but basically there all the time. Booked the car into the dealer for them to look at, they said on first visit that one of the seals was misaligned. This was not causing the problem but they said that they wanted to replace it in case it caused a problem later. Car had to be booked in following week for them to order seal. I think the creaking noise is known issue with the X3(see other postings on this thread) as they dis not quibble and told me they would have to take out the sunroof. In the end the car was in the workshop for a couple of days, partly as they admitted it was the first X3 roof done at the dealership. But full credit to the dealer the car is now fine and they also sorted a rattle at the back. Not sure what they did as had to pick up the car quickly from the dealer and as the work was done under warranty I got no invoice. Having had several BMW's before all of which had bomb proof build quality it leads me to think that QC standards have dropped, not sure if this is due to it being built in USA (compared to German manufacture)? Car is UK spec. |
