Different car.
Different size tire.
Different style and characteristics of the car

The dilemma is whether 18" fit on a m40i.

I live in Northern New England and have had Toyota 4Runner and Sequoia for winter but looking for something smaller and sportier. Don't have the option of staying home from work no matter how much snow. In past 7 years have had to lock differentials to get unstuck 2 times...should I not even be considering one of these?
BMW's xDrive is quite clever, and with just a small amount of gas, it usually get's "unstuck" rather easily. And the clearance of the X3 is quite good for a SUV, and you also have the option to play with the DSC system to allow a bit more slippage, sometimes useful to get "unstuck".

But as I have said many times; most important is the rubber. I haven't even got stuck once with my F31 xDrive, perhaps because I've always used proper Nokian winter tires.

Perhaps you need to compare two cars under similar conditions?

Just to also add to this thread with my research...

As well as TireRack showing 18's fit this car, shopBMWUSA clearly shows two 18" wheel packages for the M40i. Both the style 618 and 688 wheels they say fit.

https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/6...618,-IN-SILVER

https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/6...688,-IN-SILVER

=================================

For those of you with the M40i who have 18" wheels and snow tires

Someone else also asked about the ride, but I've not seen any replies yet. You had the 21" wheels I presume that came with the car, right? It comes with staggered wheels and F: 245/40/21 & R: 275/35/21 tires.

How was it going all the way down to 18" for winters? I'm worried the ride and handling will be too soft going from 40 / 35 profile tires to a 60, which are the recommended 18" sizes:

225/60/18
235/60/18

=================

I know narrower is better for snow tires, but I'm also thinking for this powerful a car, 225's seem really skinny, no? I've never changed that much in profile on my past BMW's going to winters.

So I was thinking of getting 245/55/18 instead, which also works because the overall diameter is only 1.5% off stock (within 3% is acceptable). I'm thinking maybe this is a good size, as it's lower profile, not too skinny, but still should be cheaper in the 18 size?

Comments?

I went 255/55r18 all around. It drove great (though winter tires are will not give same control as performance summer tires). It's a myth that performance requires low profile tires. Looks at every race car.. ever. Low profile tires have a harsh ride; as do run-flats. My 21's are pretty, but much less forgiving than the 18" wheels with 55 series rubber. I chose the 18" wheels for winter in part for cost savings, but more so I would have tall rubber that would protect the wheel from the potholes and ice chunks.

I don't know about going staggered for a winter set up. I know people do it.. I don't know anyone who actually recommends it.

Correct my understanding, please...

I've X30 with M Sports Package and 20 inch staggered setup with summer tires.

So, an 18 inch winter setup will clear M Sports Brakes (Blue callipers). Am I correct here?

Not positive. Yes for the M40i.

I have to assume that the M40i has the most restrictive (perhaps less than X3M?), more so than lesser models.

I have the blue calipers and both my 18s fit. Please recognize that you need to use the correct offset.

Research if "offset" is a new word to you.

The M40i looks like its going to fall over at the next wide turn with those little wheels.

Resurrecting this thread. Has anyone actually run 18” 618 V spoke rims over M Sport brakes? I picked up a used set at a great price but haven’t checked if they fit, I’m hoping I don’t jack up the car for no reason come winter.

I spent days researching OEM 18" wheels that would fit the X3 30i with blue M calipers and I see posts suggesting that OEM 18" wheels would not clear the calipers and they in fact do.

I'm not sure what the difference is between the 40i because on the BMW sales system also says not for 40i which is so confusing to me. I thought the 30i with the optional blue calipers and the 40i with standard blue calipers were the same.

Anyhow, got the OEM 18" style 618 v spoke installed today, but now curious why it wouldn't work for the 40i.

getbmwparts.com shows this for the part number (36-11-0-003-053)

Sometimes it could just be the rubber stamp (approval) has not been done. It could also be due to different technical specs like the offset. For instance, the offset on my 19" is 32. Not concluding by any means that the 22 will or won't fit, just stating some technical differences. And I know my example is 19", not 18".

I usually refer to other BMW models in the same series/chassis code, do some permutation, etc. then draw my own conclusion from there.
