New Snow Shoes

Ordered from tirerack.com. Went w/ 18" wheels in a 'satin' finish - thought finish might match mirros and trim. Tires slightly wider than stock @ 255/55 R 18. (Saved $200 by going up to 245 series as found closeout special.) Specs list diameter @ 0.4" larger than my 20" stock tires. This rubber will allow me to run over stuff and not sweat the pot holes.

See photos below. Don't plan to mount until eminent snow.

Enclosing receipt and photos.

I suggest you do a test fit on one front wheel ASAP to make sure they clear the brakes.
If they do, great!
If they don’t at least you know now rather than when the snow is imminent...

Didn't realise 18' wheels fitted the M40.

I called tirerack.com, they were adamant they'd fit. Perhaps you're right. Better safe than sorry.

TireRack doesn't always get a chance to test for things like brake clearance on every single model -- learned that years ago on a Subaru forum. I would not assume they actually put 18" wheels on an M40i. Could be fine for all we know but definitely test first. I assume the front calipers are the largest but don't know offhand.

I had 18” winter wheels on F80 M3 (BMW OEM) don’t think M40i brakes are any bigger. They don’t fit with ceramic brake option on the M3 I believe.

Tires fit OK. No problem clearing brakes. Little close on upper inside by control arm. With factory front, I can fit 1.5 fingers, with new rubber, only about 0.8 fingers. Probably enough. Maybe I'll order spacers - saw some somewhere in forum. Posting pics w/ Winter on front, factory 20's on rear. Including photo w/ wheel off as well, you can see larger front brakes with some interesting suspension parts (active).

So now when it snows you know they’ll fit.
I feel better!

Glad I saw this post, as I'm looking into winters and was looking for the least expensive option since my m40i is a lease. Looks like 18's will do the trick. Is there a particular offset you would recommend?

Thanks.

I might look for 10mm spacers.

I spoke tire rack this morning as I was interested in 18s as well. The guy told me that they had an M40 in and used a CAD or something to scan everything including the brakes to ensure fit. The ones I’m interested in ordering have a 32mm offset.

Has any one tried the tire rack TPMS? Any issues or programming required to make them work with your m40i?

I ordered for my e70 a couple years ago and had zero issues.

Thanks for this thread. I used your fitment experience to order 18"s (A15s in Matte Titanium) along with 225/60R-18 Michelin Pilot Alpin from TireRack. I was going to go with the non-RFT tires, but then I thought....I'd rather spend a little more money to have the peace of mind....especially in rural Colorado.

I like those A15 wheels a lot.. but tirerack.com says they're not a fit for the M40i. Did you call them to verify?

Nevermind.. now it says they fit. Go figure. ;-)
