So I guess black is in short supply! Makes little sense to me.

Yep, sucks. Especially because with the LCI, the Shadowline grill surround really completes the look. Said another way, the standard chrome grill surround looks awkward with the black grill bars...

I thought so too.

However, depending on your exterior color, it actually grows on you. I thought I needed the black grill right away and the shortage forced me to wait. The style grows on you, especially when you see it in person. This is not to say that I prefer the chrome look, but it is actually better than I expected. It looks good, better than just adequate. This is obviously a personal observation after owning the car, many others will probably disagree.

Some comparison shots shown for MBB.

I think the chrome surround on the Pytonic blue looks really nice and helps blend the grill in with the headlamps. It does grow on you.

It does look good on the PB. My order is for AW though and I don't think it's as good of a look on white. But, it's totally subjective I realize.

Ironically we're going with PB for our order as well. It seems that the only cars in my area all either black, white or BG (the new "in color" for every manufacturer these days.)

It doesn't look bad with the chrome grill but the black grill looks pretty good as well, especially if you can't justify the extra 15-20k to enter the X3 M market and would still like to have the big daddy M look.

I'm so glad I got my fully equipped '21 M40i. No shadowline, HK, SiriusXM etc. for the LCI... these are dealbreakers for me. The chrome grill looks awful to me, but that's just my taste. hope people are able to get the actual cars they ordered in the near future.

Agree, even I was in the same boat initially whether to go with Shadowline package or not. But I found a car without one and was not in a position to build one and wait for it. Now it is growing on me. Good thing is the double slat grille from the M models which makes it look classy.

Here is my car

Nice looking car sunay27! That's the same exterior color I chose, and I got the chrome surround as well. I think it helps transition the black grill to the rest of the car.

I have 2) 2019 M40i's coming off lease (actually up last month and I extended) and soon as the US configurator became available (8/12 from I could tell) I picked out what I wanted and started negotiating - signed build sheets for 2 more 2022 M40i's sent to the dealer 8/21 to place the orders. They just got into the "production begins" status this week and the dealer wrote me yesterday to say:

So we’ve been notified by the BMW factory that both new M40i’s have begun production.

They’re scheduled to arrive here before the end of October.

However there a 2 important backordered items that will delay both orders ‘indefinitely’ if we don’t give the OK (tell them to continue production):

19 inch wheels with all season tires are not available indefinitely….they’ll only replace the 19” with the 20” that only come with performance tires (not all seasons) If you’re ok with it, we’ll cover the $600 charge for the 20” wheels. I’ve ATTACHED pictures of what both M’s will look like with the 20” wheels.

Satellite and HD radio modules are NOT available right now. The factory is giving a $350 credit off the price of the cars. I know that doesn’t help much if you care able satellite radio. You can however still stream XM through the XM app if you use Apple Carplay or Android Auto.

... gave the go ahead, but I also asked if the extended shadowline was also missing and he didnt know, and if it was possible to swap the XM modules from my current G01's - also didnt know but said he would find out (does anyone here know?) ...last he said factory is putting a hold on HK too but that I would get it

These part shortages definitely take some fun away from the ordering process…

Which 20" wheels are offered as substitutes for the 19"?

699M "double spoke bi-color" seems to be the default substitution, at least on the M40i

MY21 swivels...

There are however “extra” lights in the unit that shine down and forwards/outwards to light up the wider front area - they are on continuously while parked and I noticed they brightened when I selected reverse. What I haven’t been able to check is if they switch off when driving off and/or if they switch on for corners…

EDIT:- I’ve just been out in the car again and the “extra” lights do indeed seem to act as cornering lights. It’s difficult to know exactly when you’re driving without someone else watching from outside the car but it would appear that they dim when you start driving and then brighten when you corner, after which they dim again. They seem to fade in and out as there is no sudden switch on or off.

You can see these extra lights clearly on the LHS of this photo:-

It is very interesting that yours do not swivel. I have a 21 M40i. My headlights swivel when I turn the wheel. The headlights are one of my favorite things. I can see it clearly when driving at night. I also have the 'extra light' that turns on when the wheel is turned sharply, to light up around the corner. I wonder if you were downgraded to the standard headlight from the adaptive ones? Or if the new adaptive laserlight simply does not swivel with steering.

For a LCI model, go to the BMW ConnectedDrive store and get it for $350.

There is a thread about this. See https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1788593. We already had somebody add it post purchase and provided their feedback. Join that thread and share your story.

I was looking at the headlight assembly of the pre LCI and looks like even they have the same setup as 2022's. Refer pic below, I have marked the cornering light in red

In the LCI, when you start up the headlights swivel and adjust accordingly based on the level of the ground your car is parked on. Also during night the light throw is amazing with the auto high beams, only thing is it turns off the high beam when there is a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

Wow this is cool😊 It's clearly written Adaptive LEDs, lucky you. I am not sure if all 2021 models came with Adaptive headlights. Unfortunately the LCI models do not come with adaptive lights 😔
