It's pretty sad the lack of colors in the US. They build them here, they have the paint here, why not spread the wealth a little. It's hard to understand why they won't make more colors available. All of the BMWs I see in my area are really bland, especially the X3s.

I think it's quite interesting with BMW how the different geographies have say in what gets sold into their markets.
I've heard, with regards to the North American market they try to hit a competitive price point and thus pull out some of the choices that may be available elsewhere.

jacko15: Agree with you regarding the colors. I don't understand it and don't buy the above rationale. Audi is so much better on colors. Not so sure about M-B. Porsche is also much better in choice.

I don't see price point making much of a difference in color selection. Sometimes I think BMW looks at the US as a secondary market. Like I said earlier, they're running those cars through the same paint lines as vehicles going to the EU, so why not let us have more choice. They throw in one or two extra cost colors, so why not a few more.

Are they? I read about a plant in South Africa that was specifically mentioned as exporting to Europe, but I don't really know about the split between plants.

Looks to be NA because of the front yellow reflectors.

X5 color choices are also very limited. Until you bump up to the M50i which starts at 82k it's mostly the same as the X3. There's an additional green color and that's about it, I think.

To the previous point about X5 colors: I thought this was interesting.

There are three colors with this availability footnote. I'm not clear if this says it could add 10 weeks to the build time or if the total build time could be as long as 10 weeks (in which case, what's the normal build time?).

Got our 2020 X5 in tanzanite which was supposed to take that long, but it was only a total of 4 weeks. It was considered an individual color choice as marked on the door sills. We go lucky as it was pre COVID so it came with soft close doors, heated and cooled cup holders, air suspension and acoustic glass as well.

I had a X5 on order but cancelled due to the lack of choices! I am now considering a X3 M40d LCI but appears that BMW is witholding the flagship 'M Sport Pro Edition' which should be available at launch alongside the standard M40i/d

Interesting… has anyone heard from a dealer that orders are open? I wonder if the dealers truly have allocations and an understanding of what options may be available vs restricted (as the ordering guides listed options that had been restricted from '21 vehicles due to shortages).

As it is, I had spoken with a few dealers in my area that all know I'm in the market once orders open, will be interesting if I get a call from one/any of them this week.

If this is confirmed, I'd also be interested in placing an order this month. I'd prefer the ease-of-use of a configurator, since I plan on adding only a few options, bug I guess I will have to use a guide posted in this thread.

I received similar email for X4's from same person - probably true - but agree to check with dealer who is the last to know! What I don't get is not having the configurator up until mid August - but I think I have seen this in the past from BMW - very slow on these things

UCMikeyG99 - I did ask back when I received email if you can also order X3M/X4M's as well - in case you are still thinking about it! Have not yet heard back yet

No word on the M models yet, but my friend did confirm they had received exactly one allocated X3 M40i, so I'm in the process of locking that down today. 🙌🏼
