Second Tyre Change 2021 X3 M40i - STATS till date

My X3 M40i Tire Journey So far

Hi Folks , I got my 2021 X3 M40i in Dec 2020 . I had 20 inch Staggered setup with 275/40R20 in back and 245/45R20 in front .

1. From factory I got ALENZA 001 RFT summer performance tires and I kept it as it is and it lasted me 24,109 Miles .

2. After 24,109 Miles I moved to MICHELIN PILOT SPORT ALL SEASON 4 . That was my first tire change and You can see the detailed post here. It lasted me 32k miles and at 56 miles I am doing my 2nd tire change.

I would consider myself a decently aggressive driver who accelerates and breaks hard .

Here is the tabular stat for how much Years and Miles each of the tires lated for me.

Code:
Tire Set | Installed | Replaced | Mi In | Mi Out | Driven | Time
------------------------------|-------------|-------------|--------|---------|---------|---------------
Bridgestone Alenza RFT (OEM) | Dec 2020 | Mar 2023 | 0 | 24,109 | 24,109 | 2 yrs 2.5 mos
Michelin Pilot All Season 4 | Mar 2023 | Apr 2026 | 24,109 | 56,125 | 32,016 | 3 yrs 1.5 mos
Pirelli P Zero AS+ 3 | Apr 2026 | — | 56,125 | — | — | Ongoing
My experience with The MICHELIN PILOT SPORT ALL SEASON 4 tire was great and overall I had no complaint with them except the road noise .After driving for over 3 years and 32,016 Miles , It was time to change the tires at 56125 miles.

I Was looking for another good all season performance tyre and after my research and analysis I choose Pirelli P ZERO™ AS PLUS 3 as it was an upgraded tyre and had great reviews on tire rack and other forums rated it top in its category.

Fuel Economy Stats

I also wanted to Put some statistics on fuel efficiency I have got till now :-

From Alenza run flat it was 21.3 and with Michelin it was 21.6 over course of year which is slightly better but not sure if it has actually to anything to the tires. With Pirelli reading the reviews I feel it might be little bette, will see how it delivers.

My Final Thoughts and Questions

The MICHELIN PILOT SPORT ALL SEASON 4 overall i feel was a great tire and lasted really well . Even at this stage till replacement it was handling well and had good enough breaking distance given how worn it was. With new Pirelli P ZERO™ AS PLUS 3 the immediate difference I can see is that it absorbs bumps more and it glides with less road noise but has less steering feedback than the Michelin's. These are just very initial observations.

If you see in my last post the old Alenza RFT had uneven wear so I got my car alignment fixed after installing Michelin. Given the current wear what do you guys think do I need to get alignment done again ?
  • 1. Why do the rear passenger wore out more than the driver and is it normal ?
  • 2. The front I feel wore out more even but relatively again the passenger side wore out more than driver . Any reason for that ?
  • 3. Fronts where still at 4/5 which is not the best but could have lasted more miles but it was suggested to change all four . So is this behavior common across all staggered system ? And Do All 4 tyres need to be changed for staggered system or I could have been ok with just changing rear ?
  • 4. What is the tyre pressure you guys keep ? Does that affect the feel . I have kept 36 in Front and 40 in Back in a hot tire ( As i drove more than 3 miles before filling the air) . Although bmw recommends 32 and 36. what is the ideal pressure ?
  • 5.Has anyone tried Pirelli P ZERO™ AS PLUS 3 on their x3 m40i , hows your experience ? Or if you choose another tire why you choose that ?

Thank you for reading my post and hope it helps someone . Thanks in advance for answering my questions and sharing your experience. Happy Driving !!!

Thank you . Yes I did consider Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus both of the times , I feel the primary reason of not choosing them was the availability near me . Both of the times in 2023 and now in 2026 the continental were the 2nd best tire in all the reviews. The other minor factor in consideration were that the Pirelli has the quietest possible cabin for long highway cruises and a slightly more "sporty" steering response.

Have you tried them , if yes hows your experience so far ?

Got it makes sense! I have them on my x4 m40 in the same tire size. I love them so far but we will see how long they last.

Also forgot to ask any other big maintenance or repair items on your 2019 at the stated mileage?

ALWAYS get your car aligned after getting new tires as a precaution to un even wear on your new investment. We got 24k on Alenza's and now the Michelins as you have are so much better. We don't notice road noise but with radio on HIGH she wouldn't. We ordered it with a spare as well.

Its 2021 model , Till now front and rear brake pads change once and battery changed at 55k miles . Apart from the regular maintenance . The last oil change at 55k miles dealership told that their system shows its time to change spark plug and AC filter but I don't feel anything , so the service guy told i can wait till next oil change around 65 if i don't feel anything . So still wondering if I should get the spark plug change or should I wait till next oil change .

How about you any major maintenance ?

Apparently on at least the 4 cylinder X3s like mine, things like engine air filter and spark plugs go by multiples of the oil change counter.

When I recently got my 6th oil change, I was surprised that the dealer system also said plugs were due, as I only have about 45k miles. Since the dealers and everyone else nearby wants $500-700 to change them, I will try to do it myself if I feel like I can access the rear most plug ok.
