With these types of fluids, it's mileage not age. 50k miles seems to be a good interval for them. (knock on wood) I have an e83 with 216k on it, started changing driveline every 50k at 75k miles when I got it, and have not had any issue with anything down there (manual transmission).

Someone here (you can dig and find it) used ISTA to open the second chamber and got no extra fluid out. Just food for thought. |

Getting ready to do this service. Can anyone who has skipped ISTA chime in and let me know how it went. My car is a weekend toy and I figured I’d skip ISTA and just halve the interval for fluid changes.

My 2021 xdrive 30i just hit 96k miles. My water pump was leaking ($1474) and oil was leaking from the balance shaft end caps ($813).
While in for those services, asked my dealer to quote transmission, transfer case and diff fluid changes and here's what they came back with: Transfer case, front and rear diff - $1299 Transmission flush/filter - $1798 I said no thanks -- need to find a good indy shop on the south shore. |

Hello everyone,
I need a help. My car has low vibration when I start driving at low speed and attept to slow down. The dealership recommended to replace to transfer case which cost around 5500$. Is it required to do it as they recommended or just replace oil as some mechanic said. My car is BMW X3 M40i. 2019 Last edited by alyoseua; 04-18-2026 at 05:14 AM.. |

No one here can diagnose the problem with your car- suggest you take it to another Dealership or Independent BMW shop and get a 2nd opinion on the issue. Replacing the fluid may be the solution, it’s certainly not an expensive job compared to replacing the entire xfer case. Last edited by Wgosma; 04-18-2026 at 08:18 AM.. |

alyoseua Get the transfer case fluid changed (as well as F&R diff fluid) at an independent BMW service shop. There's a ton of them around you. If that doesn't help you're likely in for a transfer case swap. Again, the independents might have a better deal than the dealer.
