I wonder how many 5D MkII + 7D owners will sell both to get this.

Pretty impressive high-ISO performance.

For those of you on the fence... here's a good review of it from a wedding photog (he doesn't go much into the video capabilities):

I'm likely, but later in the year, probably next fall. I'll probably borrow one from CPS, along with the Series II 600mm lens and do some comparing with my 7D/500mm combo. I'm afraid it'll be a trade off between high-ISO performance and detail resolution (isn't it always) and I'll have to make a choice.

This clearly blows the 1D X into the weeds for my usage. It's not going to have the detail resolution of this camera and the Mk III looks to have enough high-ISO performance to satisfy me. Including the X's AF system in the MkIII is HUGE for me. That was the feature that I was Jonesing for in the X, but now I can get it for a lot less money and with better detail resolution.

Thanks for the link Dave. This is a huge difference. The 5D2 was already really good, but this is amazing. Honestly, at the sizes I work with, I can easily go to ISO 25600. Above that you can still take shots, albeit it's a bit noisy, but if it's between not being able to take the shot vs. taking a somewhat noisy one, I'd pick the latter every time.

I don't do bird photography, so the ability to crop isn't high on my priorities like you Dave. What I love about it is the higher ISO capabilities and the much-improved AF. The AF was killing me on the 5D2... hell, it was just as good as my 7 year old 20D! At higher ISOs, I literally had to manually focus many times... on a $2500 camera that's just a fail, imo. That being said, I'll take the higher FPS, HDR capabilities, and better accessories as a bonus.

Honestly, the only thing that's stopping me from pulling the trigger on the 5D3 is the price... anyone wanna reserve my 5D2?

If I didn't crop so often (only for birds and some wildlife) I wouldn't give it a second thought either. I suspect that for most users and for videos, Canon's 5D3 sensor will be KING (at least for a short while).

I use those tiny pixels on my 7D, but noise becomes a problem pretty quickly. I now shoot at ISO 6400 pretty regularly, but the results will NOT stand a 100% look. With the 5D3 it looks like 12800 might show well in some very large sizes.

For wildlife, the need to buy more focal length for a FF camera is a little daunting also. The 600mm is now $12,000!!

The camera body actually looks like a bargain to me, but those super-teles have gone out into another orbit.

Dave

assuming the 1D X get's f/8 AF, it would be cheaper to stick with your 500mm f/4 super-tele with a 2x extender.

Dave, you wouldn't consider the Sigma telephoto lenses? Still expensive, but in at a couple thousand less then the same focal length versions of the Canon lenses.

Or are the optics and auto focus a bit too much of a trade off?
