Anytime. When going forward, you'll need to press the button to activate it manually.

It will switch off after you go over a certain speed or drive forward over a certain distance.

Really? When I test drove one, I couldn't get it to work like that.

Sweet. I'll have to test mine once I get it. What do I need to do to activate it while driving forward?

Perhaps it's because I have the "Top View" rear camera? I know I've used it numerous times like that to make sure I'm pulling in exactly centered between the lines in a parking lot. (Yes, I've already gotten lazy with all this tech )

But I can switch between Top View and normal rear camera anytime.

Just press the button when stopped or going forward slowly. No need to be in "Park". But when going over ~30 Km/h, pressing the button does nothing. You're locked out of that function.

Mine too. On mine, if you press the rear view button while going forward, only the ultrasonic parking aid sensors are activated (front and rear), so you see the parking "radar" display. The only way I've been able to initially trigger the camera is to shift into reverse. It's interesting (and nice) that even if you're actually moving backward, the front parking sensors are still activated. (I don't have the "top-view" system.)

However, I don't have the NAV system and the larger display screen which allows a split screen mode, so it may be different on that configuration.

Another thing to "note" : If you're going to back up using the camera. Be absolutely sure to press the shift interlock button on the side of the gearshift lever when you grab reverse. If you don't, the "YOU ARE A DUMMY" warning will come up on the display screen for a full 10 seconds and will block you from using the rear-view camera no matter what you do. Note to BMW: Clear the damm warning once the driver corrects his/her error!!!!!

LOVE the rear-view camera. It makes parking a "piece of cake".

+1 I've had the you are a dummy warning stuck on my screen whilst trying to see the radar for the PDC, long after I've done what I was told by the warning. Such bad design. Please sort BMW.

Rear view camera is one of the options I missed but based on feedback on this forum and using the X3 without it, I wish I had one.

First this forum made me spend more money and now it teases me with positive feedback on cool options I didn't order!

When I get the car or if I see a pic of the gear shift, maybe I can visualize what you're talking about. Thanks as always!

It's a button on the side of the gear shift knob. Foot on the brake, push the button, and you can go from neutral to reverse or drive.
Found out that if you have the gear shift pushed to the left (Manual mode), you're stopped and put it into "Park", there something that shoves the gearshift back to the right.
I probably should read the owners manual a bit more in-depth.

How much did you pay over invoice? (if you are interested in sharing, otherwise fine)

Yep! This forum makes it way too easy to tell other people how to spend their money. By the way, you probably would have been much happier with an X6M than the X3 (talk about cool!).

So I'm guessing that the backup camera is disabled while in D for US spec cars?

It's not clear if mine works because it's a Canadian spec car, or because I have the "Top View" feature.

I can also dismiss the gear shift warming instantly by pressing OK in my iDrive

No. If you push the button below a certain speed it activates. I use it all the time pulling in to tight spots -- in Top View mode, that is.

I wonder when they'll start doing coding for the x3
I'd like to be able to have the camera on whenever I press the button, irrespective of speed

Maybe also a front camera and I would not need to look out the windscreen

I would actually like a front camera. I like the visual vice graphic and would like to be able to see the front line of a parking spot in Top View.
