Just rented an X3 for a road trip last weekend. Car was pretty nice, but has BMW introduced lag in the latest iDrive controller? Or was this particular one broken? If you click up/down/left/right it felt horribly mushy and didn’t return to Center / declick fast enough. My car is iDrive 6, for comparison, and the controller just works.

The iDrive9 controller feels very different than anything previous in iDrive controller. It’s much less crisp and I can’t really feel tilting the controller button. There won’t be an iDrive10 controller so enjoy your iDrive 6 while you can.

There won't even be a controller in ID9 starting with MY27 G45.

Just remove idriver controller from MY27 or interior design change expected?

The controller and buttons are all capacitive touch. The capacitive touch controls are not very good, and my biggest complaint with the G45.

And the removal of the ID9 knob from the console is for MY '27 G45 in late 2026.
Personally I don't use the ID9 knob in my car.

rigoschris wroteThe controller isn't very crisp, but the good news is you'd barely ever use it. I only use it when I've got a very long list of Apple Music playlists to scroll through and that's it. Most likely they will use a center console design similar to the iX3

The operation of the controller is nowhere near as good as previous versions. Nevertheless, I have worked out how to use it albeit with unsatisfactory feedback from it. Mainly use it to bring up/cycle through shortcuts and for scrolling through tracks and radio stations.

I use it mainly for altering the scale on the sat nav map.

In the beginning i thought I'll use it more frequently but in the end I mainly use it for above mentioned usecases of music title list scrolling and nav map zoom.
So if they remove it, I wouldn't miss it realy. The touch interface is much quicker and more intuitive than the oldschool controller.

I’m waiting for it to remove the steering wheel, and the inevitable fan feedback of “well I only ever drive in a straight line and don’t need a steering wheel”.In the beginning i thought I'll use it more frequently but in the end I mainly use it for above mentioned usecases of music title list scrolling and nav map zoom.

Touch works fine whilst stationary and moving in a straight line. Add speed and bends and it’s not soo good fighting gforce to stab a screen whist taking your eyes off the road, or having to use long winded voice.

Manouvering the screen with the iDrive controller is more distracting than a fast tap on the screen because you need to coordinate hand movement and your view needs to follow the cursor on the screen.
If BMW would have removed the iDrive controller on Idrive 6 or 7 I would agree, that it is bad idea. But with the redesign of iDrive 9 & 10, the GUI is focused on touch control with shorter paths and direct access to functions where iDrive 6 & 7 required submenu structures.

Once again you’re just a fan boy lol.
Having your arm anchored provides a fixed point to overcome gforce rather than attempting to stab at icon on a screen. Just like selecting driving modes is worse in the G45.

The one cool thing about the iDrive 9 controller knob is you can press it lightly to get rid of the annoying “ok” banner.

Maybe a simple software update can unlock 70mph?

Arctic Blue wroteDepends how long you can wait, as the 2027 is reportedly pushed back a little from normal timelines. You probably can't get one until late 2026. On the plus side, it may get the slightly updated B58 that is going in the G65 X5 40.Since I've noticed many of you rarely use the iDrive controller, I'm wondering—for those of us not in a hurry—which makes more sense: buying the X3 now to keep the physical controller, or waiting for the 2027 model without it?
