Hi all,

I need advice please re: tyre pressures. On a couple of occasions when collecting my car from my local BMW main dealer, I noticed that they deflated my tyre pressures, more so the rear ones. I also took my car to my local Independent Specialist the other day for a quotation on brake replacement works and the gentleman there also said that my tyre pressures seem too high!

How do you guys read this decal which is stamped on the inside of the drivers car door? Photo attached.

Just me and the wife normally, so a load of two people.

My rubber is -

Front - 245x40xR20 99Y Pirelli P-Zero.
Rear - 275x35xR20 102Y Pirelli P-Zero.

Thanks for reading! An image attached to this post, provided by the poster

The chart is telling you the recommended tire pressure for car fitted with a given tire/wheel size and load (number of passengers) in the vehicle.

Example: look at the upper LEFT quadrant- it lists one tire size:

- 245/55 R17 (17" wheel diameter)

- recommended inflation for vehicle with that wheel/tire and a load = 3 passengers should be both Front and Rear tires at 2,4 Bar (which is also 35 psi)

- Same wheel/tire with 5 passenger load: tire inflation is 2,4 Bar Fronts / 2,5 Bar rears.

Tire pressures should be measured with 'cold' tires; i.e. before being driven any significant distance (which generates heat and causes tire pressure to rise)

ALWAYS check tire pressure when engine is cold during cold start, good to check in the early morning.

Red is what is recommended for the front (based on the tire specs & number of people)
  • 2.2 bar or 32 PSI (depending on gauge being used)

Green is what is recommended for the rear (based on the specs you gave):
  • 2.8 bar or 41 PSI (depending on gauge being used)
