I have an X4 in the UK and would love to be able to have Apple Car Play fitted to my car. Happy to pay for the install/service etc.
I have seen various posts that this could be fitted to my car but when I contacted BMW Connected Drive directly they advise me that although I have pro nav package 609 I still would need 6NW (wireless charging) or 6FR (rear seat entertainment). Can anyone shed any light on this please or should I just forget the idea of getting this done? Thanks in advance.

Carplay was an option for me on connected drive website for $300. I neither have wireless charging or rear seat entertainment

I have CarPlay in my 2018 with Professional nav. I don’t have Wireless Charging or rear seat entertainment either.

Thank you for the responses. Think the issue with me is that my car is a 2016.

Don’t get me wrong, CarPlay is great but:

It’s really meant for touch screens. It’s kind of cumbersome to have to use the I drive controller for it.


The maps function is great, but navigation doesn’t go through the HUD. So I usually use the BMW Nav (which car play opens for you, which is nice).

My data usage has gone through the roof since I bought this car. Not a great thing if you’re conscious about that.

All that being said, I use it daily and love it. I barely go into the Native BMW ICE but I know I wouldn’t mind without CarPlay. I was happy without it in all my other BMWs.

I have CarPlay and have Wireless Charging no rear seat entertainment. Carplay is by far the most useless option I got. Tried to see the benefit a couple of times, never used it again in the last 6? 9? months.

You need Bluetooth LE and WiFi... see footnote #7

...When not factory-equipped with CarPlay™ Compatibility, vehicles must be factory-equipped with Navigation and either 6NW (Wireless Charging), 6NP (Enhanced USB and Bluetooth), or 6NS (Smartphone Integration / Enhanced USB and Bluetooth) in order to be eligible for purchase of CarPlay Compatibility via the My BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

some additional info...

6NW Wireless Charging, including 6WD WiF Hotspot is now available. This option also includes and an additional USB outlet with up to 2.1 Amp charging current, allowing for faster smartphone charging.

6NS Smartphone Integration is no longer available, as the functionality previously included in this option is now available wirelessly with 6NW Wireless Charging.

I have a X4 from 2015 and man do I miss having Apple CarPlay. I get it that BMW NAV is ok, but I prefer to use Waze which give me more relevant traffic tips, updates itself and has some radar information.

what about the Chinese MMI carplay decoder boxes you find on aliexpress?

MMI is for audi's.
