Front Wipers Do Not Stay Upright?
I took possession of the vehicle 2 weeks ago ( little slow) and hand washed for the first time. Washing the front windshield and noticed the hood prevents both wipers from staying upright? You can raise the a few inches before reaching the edge of the hood. No problem with the rear wiper.
Surprised about the design given cold and wet winters can lead to wipers freezing on the windshield. Also the added difficulty in clearing snow and ice buildup.

Page 64 of the US manual:
Fold-out position of the wipers Required when changing the wiper blades or under frosty conditions, for example. 1. Switch off the ignition. 2. Under frosty conditions, ensure that the wiper blades are not frozen onto the windshield. 3. Press the wiper lever up beyond the point of resistance and hold it for approx. 3 seconds, until the wiper remains in a nearly vertical position. After the wipers are folded back down, the wiper system must be reactivated. Fold the wipers back down Before switching the ignition on, fold the wipers back down to the windshield; otherwise, the wipers may become damaged when they are switched on.◀ 1. Switch on the ignition. 2. Press the wiper levers down. The wipers move to their resting position and are ready for operation. Last edited by scs-X3; 06-10-2012 at 05:48 PM.. Reason: us manual |

Thanks you and really appreciate the information!
Surprised with BMW complex decision to extend the hood to prevent a simple pull and hold is such an idiotic design. I'll just use the Defroster...

same with my Audi A4. I would think the only reason to do this is for aerodynamics
and yes, I have had my wipers sealed in ice like carbonite in the winter.. and the Audi did not have defroster lines. |

My GTI was the same. Had to shut off the ignition and flick the rain wipe lever down and that would stick them up so you could do what you needed to. I'm sure it's for aerodynamics.
