Bloody rattling cargo / trunk / boot cover
As a major rattle nut I am (touch wood) largely impressed with my X3s build so far and have no cabin noise issues (other than excessive wind noise at speed but that's a 'feature' apparently)... with one major exception.
The extensible cargo / trunk / boot lid cover thing. It rattles when extended, less so when retracted, pretty non stop. I knew this was coming as the demonstrator was exactly the same and that thing has rattle city written all over it. If I take it out, it stops, so I manage to keep myself calm thinking that I can do that if it gets to me - but I shouldn't have to, plus I don't like the boot being 'exposed' - I keep a couple of small things in there. I am pretty sure there was a post about someone improving it with lubrication or bits of felt but for the life of me I can't find it. Would someone be able to point me in the right direction?

I had a ticking sound coming from the rear cargo area. I thought it was the boot door and I tired adjusting it many times. It was really pissing me off. The dealer could not find the source after multiple times. I ended up looking for it and found it was coming from under the rear cargo area. If you take the floor cover up there is a cargo space, underneath this is where the battery is located. The squeak was coming from the styrofoam in back of the battery rubbing against the plastic panel on top of it.
Hope this helps. It might not be the same source but what the heck worth a look or may I say feel. Good luck hope you can get it silent. |

Hi mate
I fixed mine this evening. It is a temporary fix but it works. I discovered that is wasn't the internal mechanism that was rattling - it was the whole cover housing that was making a noise. I lifted the back of the cover mechanism (as if I was going to remove it) and stuffed some examination gloves under it (clean ones of course). I've attached a quick and dirty photo so you can see what I mean. I plan to cut out some sticky back felt and put it on the mating surface between the mounting point and the cover housing itself. I hope that helps Cheers P |

We found the best solution: took the rattle box out all together and stuck it in the corner of the garage.
I may add ours back this summer as the temps increase things may quiet down a bit. |

I just took my X3 in for the software update and a Nav. glitch and forgot to mention the rattling trunk cover. Turns out when they test drove it to see if they got the Nav glitch fixed they must have heard it and fixed it! They used the exact product that you have on order. They also placed the tape underneath the handle where it can hit off the plastic. It is now quiet as a church mouse.

Fixed ours with more permanent fix by using felt pads (the ones you put under chair legs so they run smooth over a hard floor), places them at the contact points between the cover and the plastic housing ans steel pin which accept te cover....exactly where the glove and piece of cloth are placed in the pics above....left side only (uk).
If anyone would like pics, ask and I will take some. |

I have to admit that these rattles drive me mad !
Will try some of the fixes suggested, Also noticed that I get noise from stuff moving around in boot. I have the BMW boot liner and am disappointed by this as the surface is not really non slip. In the process of ordering a non slip mat to stop things moving when going round corners. |
