better price on build your own vs in stock?
I am looking at inventory amongst all the dealers within a 50mi radius.
I was hoping to get HUD option, but no one has this in stock. Just wondering if anyone has experience in negotiating a price on an inventory car vs custom build. I am assuming that dealers want to move what they have in stock, but just went to test drive a Q5 and the audi dealer has NONE in stock, he is selling them by pre selling everything he can order! I am 20 mi north of boston so its not like I am in an area with little movement. this forum indicates that prices are varying between 500-1k over invoice, but don't know if that applies to custom build? |

In stock is always cheaper. Floorplan = sitting money = interest being charged. That being said, finding one in stock might be a different story. In Canada, every X3 is pretty much sold out with an exception of some dealerships may have models for demo purposes only.

I question whether there are 2012 X3s in stock, at any dealer anywhere. The X3 is in high enough demand that there is no "dealer stock". I suspect that you will find that the listed inventory is on order, but not in stock - i.e. it doesn't really exist. Make an order, and one of those "inventory" cars will magically turn into yours. There may be a few 2012 demos around, there may be a few closely guarded 2012 early orders around, but there ain't no stock.

The dealer I bought mine from has a 35i in stock but I'm pretty sure it was their demo only car. It had a lot of miles on it. Nothing else in stock. I payed $500 over invoice on an custom order. I got it in just over a week to boot.

Give Alex @ BMW of Peabody a call. He might have a production slot coming up really soon, so you might get your car between Xmas and New Year's.

when i was shopping in August, there was 15-20 on the lot in a 30mi radius (searching on cars.com for new X3's in 30mi radius of my zip) currently 4-6 on the same search - and half of those are probably ordered X3's that show up on dealer inventory between its arrival and customer delivery, although they aren't available for sale or test drive. My CA thought the X3 would be a hot commodity as winter got closer, perhaps he's right. Doesn't seem like those of us in the US have a long wait for a build slot though based on the discussions here.... you can still order it and take delivery in 30 days.

I was at Herb Chambers in Boston and they had 4-6 35i's nicely equiipped, even had a Msport carbon black with everything EXCEPT premium audio.....can't believe someone would put everything on this and not premium audio. These are all for sale. None of them have premium audio. Seems like everyone that has a unsold X3 doesn't have one with the premium audio...what gives Maybe BMW drivers only listen to talk radio

I found a 2011(!) in stock with M sport package fully loaded, which is what I wanted. I bought it 5 days ago. If you can find one in stock with the options you want, the dealers will work with you. Every day a car sits on the lot is more money in interest. I ended up getting the car at 1800 UNDER invoice. They wanted to move the metal because they are looking at keeping it for the entire winter because cars don't sell dec-feb. I got lucky. But I think they will deal with in stock stuff.

thanks for the thoughts. when i search for inventory with say 30 mi of BMW peabody, every dealer has between 3 -8 cars in inventory. Don't know if they are sold, but don't know why they would put this up as inventory on their respective websites.
Also, I had wanted hud. can this be a dealer option, or does it have to be factory. No dealer has it. Finally, is there a list where the options, 639, 6AA, etc are all listed? |

Go North Young Man
The dealers in southern NH --- Tully in Nashua, and IRA in Stratham --- will both beat the deals in Boston Metro. They also provide nice loaners on request. No one stocks HUD because it is a seldom ordered expensive option.

I assume the situation in US is the same as Canada. I ordered mine yesterday and expected delivery is early March. No one has any 2012 in stock in Canada except demos and they are giving $1200 discount. I made a factory order and got 5% off the total price which I think is pretty good considering it's factory build.
