M40i with all kind of errors popping up
Hi all,
I have a M40i LCI just 1 year old with 12k km, and no issues had until today. After parking the car at the mall and starting again, suddenly got a error message in the main dash: rear differential error, you can continue driving but let it check at dealership. Then all other kind of errors popped up, like airbag etc. Also noticed a stiffer steering. My first thought was a faulty battery. But car data shows battery is fine, at 14.4V. Also shows like 100s of errors in the list. I am puzzeled… Could be some kind of software error. Had running a firmware upgrade from the Cel App in background, but can’t imagine that it can cause this kind of error. Dropped the car at the dealer, will know more on Monday I guess. Anyone experienced this before? |

Here's an interesting update:
Just got the car back. There was an unusual drop in voltage in the car that messed with all kind of ECUs. They couldn't explain it, but all was fine when they started the car after the weekend. So I told the Rep., that there was an OTA Update in the app and, since I had activated "automatic download" for software upgrade, the app was downloading it to the car and probably started the update. As soon I mentioned this, it was clear for them. They strongly reccomend to not do OTA updates, since they had many issues with customers, even after a few weeks from the update. It was not new to them! Finally, they loaded the latest software in the shop and car runs with no issues again! Hope this will be useful information for somebody that might get issues after OTA software upgrades. |

I was getting my annual service at the dealership for my 2020 x3 m40i a few weeks ago, and talking to my service advisor. I've known him for years, and he was sharing that he'd just gotten a new 2023 for himself.
I said that I was still happy with mine, the only thing I was jealous of was OTA capability, my car missed getting it by a few months apparently. He said it wasn't worth it, that OTA fails **all the time** (he put a lot of emphasis on that) and then people have to bring in the car (or have it towed in) and they end up having to have it done at the service dept regardless. So he won't do it in his own car unless he's parked there at the dealership. I thought that was rather interesting. |

Looks like my experience is confirming his statement! Thanks for sharing.
I am wondering that they throw this out to customers, these days, causing issues. I am glad that it wasn’t anything serious, but imagine this happens out in nowhere. We have bad roadside service in Europe, I had my experiences already… |

This adds another reason why I’m probably not doing RSUs… along with the possibility of losing ASS memory coding.

My M40i is pre LCI so no OTA updates, however my wife’s 2020 X5 has this capability. I have had 5 OTA updates that went flawlessly since day one. Assuming the procedures are the same I am not sure a dealer would tell you never to upgrade OTA. I will say that you have to follow the procedure 100% or there is a danger of bricking the vehicle. I have been fortunate that all the applied updates as far as I can tell did not introduce any bugs, which could be what happened to the OP. Fix one thing and break another!
