"Vehicle key missing" / inaccurate fob detection

I really like the feature of auto lock/unlock as I approach/leave the car...when it works. But it seems to be very unreliable to me.

In a conversation with a BMW genius, he said that the key needs to feel vibration to "wake up" the key and start transmitting.

Which brings me to my issue today....

I stop car to let out a passenger. Key is still in my pocket. As soon as the rear passenger door opened, I got the "vehicle key missing"

Do others experience it this way? Or should I bring this in to get looked at? Seems like the type of thing they're not going to be too helpful with!

Every time this has happened to me, it has behaved correctly. For example, gave the key to my wife because she came back to the car earlier than me (at at store). Later, she gets off the car, key in handbag. I am left with this error.

Anyway, what you are seeing is not something you should be seeing - in my opinion. Maybe replace the battery. Possibly it is losing signal. But I'm not sure how to explain rear door opening.

Key in pocket next to cell phone? I've heard of that causing funky issues with interior key and comfort access issues

I have also had issues with access when my key fob is in a side pocket with my wallet with credit card protection liners.

Me too, I thought it was the wireless charger add-on but it still happens once in a while without it.

I had this same issue a few weeks ago. SA said it was likely the fob battery, but I knew it wasn't since I just changed the battery myself. I took it in and they initially tried to claim that the "wrap" may be interfering with the signal since the door handles were wrapped...BS. They ended up running diagnostics and cleared the message and hasn't had an issue since.

Along the same lines, when my wife walks up to the car and unlocks it first (usually a rear door to load kids into carseats) the car switches to her profile. Then I walk up to the driver's door, and in order to get it to switch back to my profile I have to do a ritualistic pagan dance, re-locking and unlocking the doors (sometimes multiple times) while waving my keyfob around outside of my pocket.

My F25 doesn't change profiles when unlocking via the passenger door comfort access, and if it's not already in the right profile, it switches immediately upon grabbing the driver's door handle (even if already unlocked). Any tips? or has it really taken that much of a step back?

Thanks for all the comments. Seems like it isn't happening like this for most. Unfortunately, I have a bunch of the "issues" that you have suggested.

- the car has xpel
- I have added a wireless charger
- the key is in my pocket with my wallet

I'll try and remove some of these variables but realize I may just end up at the dealership...

Added on wireless charger is likely to get the fob interference. especially, when the phone is charging.

keeping the fob in your pocket should solve this issue.

I have the same issue since a while.
Did you find the issue for it?
