X3MC '22 Winter Tire Package
X3M Comp '22
Good Afternoon All, I recently purchased an x3m comp '22 that has Continental sport-contact 6 255/40ZR21 Max Performance Summer.. I live in northern NJ where cold temperatures have only just begun & snow is on the horizon. Do most x3m drivers in similar conditions / tire setups switch out for a winter package? Im assuming the ones that do opt-in switch out for a brief time period dec-march? Is it worth it in my case, or can I get away with this setup due to the 4wd or am I asking for trouble Im averaging 5-600 miles a month & am required to drive in inclement weather but its infrequent in nj. Thanks in advance[IMG][/IMG] |

I wouldn't recommend keeping the max summers on for the winter. I'm in NJ as well and had the dealer swap out the Conti's for the new Michelin AS4s before picking up my '22 so waiting to see how those do.
If I had won the stock tire lottery with Michelins I would have purchased a separate set of wheels and tires for the winter, but I got Contis. I had my '20 with summer Contis out in the snow and it was not fun. |

that being said, it'll be impossible for you to drive with summer tires the moment a few flurries hit the ground. don't do it. awd means nothing. either get a set of winter tires or at the very least, get some decent all season tires to replace your summers if you are planning on driving during the winter.

Summer tires stop working at about 45 degrees, and in addition to being dangerous, you will ruin the tires.
They are not to be used in the cold, much less in the snow. Per Tire Rack: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiret...jsp?techid=273

Do not, I repeat do NOT attempt to get thru a NJ winter on summer performance tires. They will be hard as a rock. AWD won't help as they'll all 4 be spinning and the steering wheel will not do anything, nor will the brake pedal.
Most either run all seasons or winter tires Nov-Mar. |

I used to switch to Pirelli Scorpion winter tires for the winter months, and stay on the stock 21" rims. I don't like the smaller look and it made 0 difference, the pirelli's were great in the snow.
I recently changed to Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4's, as i didn't want to spring for another set of wheels, and i didn't want to flip back and forth. My summer tires (The contis) also had some ride quality issues. I find the Michelin ASs just as good in the wet and cold as the Pirelli's and better the the conti summer tires in the dry. |

Proper winter tires would be a choice one can literally sleep well with. |

Driving in winter weather with summer tires can be done. I did it on the way back from the dealership. Would I want to do it every day it snows? NO, but it can be done.
I do have doubts about it ruining the actual tire, people also stated this about driving your winters in the summer. It will wear faster, but you can do that too if you feel inclined. AWD helps in the snow, but your stopping, cornering, and basically everything are affected. Slides are not controlled and tires can really break free at any time due to lost traction. If you get any kind of snow, get a winter setup. I made the mistake many years ago in my 2013 WRX to not get winter tires right away and got stuck in my driveway in 14" of snow. I would say these are a need and not a want. Now, if you wanted to swap those gorgeous LCI Comp wheels, for V-spoke wheels, I would also oblige that as well. Even though it would be swapping summers for summers. I went with a square setup on Niche rims with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV tires for the winter, and I couldn't be happier with the winter performance of them. |
