2006 E83 X3 2.0d
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and excited to be part of it. Thanks for allowing me to post this and thank you in advance. I drive a 2006 BMW X3 2.0d (e83) 6spd manual. I have recently started to experience 2 problems and would appreciate it if someone could help me to identify and diagnose the problems: 1) When I turn to the right there is a knocking sound (vibration) coming from my left from wheel - it only happens when I turn sharply to the right; and 2) when a go-to second gear, there is a different knocking sound (vibration) almost as if a drive shaft is slipping or the transfer case is slipping. If a feather the throttle there is no sound, if I accelerate normal to hard then there is the knocking sound. It is also in 1st and 3rd gear if I go deeper in the revs. Regards |

The first thing is to determine if the frequency varies by road speed or engine speed. Based on your description I'd guess road speed.
1) First guess is the outer CV joint on the front left axle 2) I'd start by looking at the center support bearing (CSB) on the driveshaft Best thing to do next is to safely get under the car and perform an inspection of all the axles. You'll be looking for things like torn or leaking boots that have let the grease out and water in. At the CSB, check the condition of the rubber. See if you can move the driveshaft around.
