Tuning for 2021 X3M Comp late 2020 Build Date? / BM3 Not Supported

Hey guys,

Had to replace my 2020 X4M that was totaled in an accident with a new 2021 X3M Comp with a build date of 11/20. I tried to install BM3 but unfortunately, they said (after purchasing the tune) that cars with a DME build date of June 2020 and later cannot be tuned at the moment by any company because they have yet to crack the updated DME.

Has anyone been able to tune their later 2020 builds? I feel like there should have been some sort of warning on BootMod's website regarding specific build dates being supported. Would really like to find a solution if its out since the car stock is a bit sluggish (especially after getting accustomed to a tuned one.)

Overall, my experience with their tune on my first catless stage 2 X4M was incredible. The only frustration is that they wouldn't transfer my previous license to the new car unless I was able to uninstall it from the previous car which is totaled and nowhere to be found.

Thanks for any advice!

I fell for the bootmod website advertising the bootmod for all X3M 2019 to present and it wasn’t until I purchased and tried to download the software that I learned my Dec2020 build was locked out. Eager to try it out and avoid the difficulty of installing a JB4 like my last BMWs. Pro tuning and Mission Performance both told me it shouldn’t be long before they crack the code but I’m not sure I believe them

Be patient guys, most of the late 2020 builds as MY 2021 model cars cannot be tuned.

True, but the vendors have to change their websites so those buying 2021 models aren’t fooled into thinking there’s a tune available. The irony is I have less than 200 miles on my car and there’s an ice storm every day so it’ll be awhile before I can mess with it anyway

I've been waiting since November for them to resolve this. Don't want to bench flash it. Hopefully they can unlock it soon

I asked a question via BM3 support and I believe they are expecting to have a solution the 2nd-3rd week of June.

Not surprised. Given how few X3Ms there appear to be, BM3 is probably waiting for demand to pick up with the release of the M3/M4

Picked up my car a few days ago. Thanks to this thread I was able to determine that my 2020 X3MC was flashable. Door card build date was 09/19. Promptly purchased the MHD license and flashed stage one. It was quick stock but Holy sheeeeit. This thing is a rocket. I mean, my M2 with pure stage two on ethanol was quick, but this SUV feels like it’s on a whole other level. I’m blown away w how fast it is w 91oct flash. I was going to do downpipes but now I’m not sure I need them lol. Will try the ethanol blend next. Sorry for boasting, I just wanted to conclude that it will be worth the wait for those of you w newer DME

That’s excellent! Surprised a 2020 was still leftover. Besides the tune I’m jealous you have the traditional gauge cluster

This makes me want a Stage One tune on my 2021 X3 MC when it arrives. If it can perform like that on our 91 California octane, that's impressive...

There is a 2020 X3M non-Comp at the dealership I am buying my 2021 X3M from. The 2020 is what I test drove to make my decision!
They said they would make a good deal on it for me, but...
1. I actual want the new gauges.
2. It was black and I will never own another black car.
3. It did not have all the options I wanted.

Sooo I put downpipes on this week and reflashed the car lol. Yeah it’s gnarly now, are you or anyone running ethanol noticing significant lag in lower RPM range? I never noticed it before but it’s quite abrupt now. The turbos literally kick in and I get a huge surge of power, almost like the fueling is a little off. I should probably datalog it and have it reviewed.

Out of curiosity, what made you decide to go with MHD? Did you run it on your M2? Did you experience the lag on the stage 1 tune and how would you say the power delivery was?

Yeah exactly, I already had everything from my M2 and figured I’d stick with MHD. Although now BM3 has some pretty nice features for the S55 like map switching and anti-lag that has me wondering if I should have switched over haha. MHD will likely follow suit. The stage one tune ran flawlessly. Drives like stock, buttery smooth power delivery, pulls much harder and you ofcourse can add burbles if that’s your thing.

EDIT: So I just went for a drive and took a datalog. Now I’m not feeling any lag lol. It could just be that I’m not used to a twin turbo or maybe it is gear and rpm specific where I’m feeling it. But just did some pulls and the car feels stupid fast. I’ll chime in if my tuner sees anything wrong w the OTS map. We’ll probably do a custom soon regardless.

Do you guys know how to confirm whether or not the ECU is a 2020 or 2021? My vehicle was a Nov 2020 build I believe.

The ECU change was in June of 2020. With a build date of Nov 2020 you'll be on a locked ECU.

I don't condone necromancy on threads, but since you asked, ECUs dated 6/20 and later must be unlocked by FEMTO in order to be tuned. That entails sending your ECU on a European vacation to Finland for 7-10 days give or take.

It took the tuner market 4 years to crack GM's Global B system. GM introduced it with the 2019 model change over and it was just cracked in June of this year. It is the same scenario as well in that it's one company who accomplished it and you have to ship them the ECM.

Also, everyone remember when MP was posting that they cracked the BMW ECM, 2 years ago? Yet still nothing from them, not even the ability to mail in a ECM for physical unlock at their location.
