Blown S58 Motor
So, I heard there is a blown S58 motor (head/cylinder issue from a failed injector). However, all the info I have is not 100% validated.
Here is what I know: 1. Car - 2020 X3M 2. Tune - Mission Performance E50 3. Previous Tune - Bootmod3 91, 93, E30 and Mission Performance 93 4. Some logs didn't look the best on a variety of the tunes. I'm no pro though so this doesn't hold much weight. 5. Was logging with BM3, but BM3 license may have been sold thus no logging during the issue. 6. Repair costs were over $10K. 7. Ethanol could have water in it thus stating a higher E% than actual. Here is what I don't know: 1. Were the plugs gapped to .0024" as required by MP E50 tune? 2. Was the fuel verified to be E50 during each pull or near E50? 3. Has anyone else had a blown S58 motor? 4. Is there any log associated with when it blew? 5. What was the cause or evidence of how it blew? 6. Does MissionPerformance know about this? 7. What was the owner doing when it blew, WOT from 0 MPH or downshift to 7100RPMs in S3 and floor it and not shift gears? Notes: 1. I don't immediate blame anything for a blown motor. Without all the evidence and view points we don't know anything. For all we know a mouse could have chewed threw the turbo inlet and jumped in. 2. I have the Mission Performance E50 tune currently and car seems to be running well and logs look good from my limited experience reviewing them. The only thing that could be bad from what I notice is the higher AFR right after flooring it, but that is under 3K RPM in this example. For example running E49 and WOT: https://datazap.me/u/sd306/log-16106...6-37-38&solo=5 My car is running 0-60 in 3s with full weight and 10.77 1/4 mile with an okay test. 3. Many other tuners have had engines blow due to non-tune related issues and would have blown stock. JB4, BM3, Cobb, etc. 4. Most of the tunes increase power which obviously increases wear and stress. 5. The B58 motor appeared to have an injector issue that caused the same outcome running BM3. BMW had a revised fuel rail and possibly injectors. Not sure if they were replaced due to the emissions law changing or issues: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1690672 6. Only had one issue with MP E50 loaded and it was my fault of having too high ethanol - E70 probably. Then I got the ethanol analyzer from Fuel-It to prevent that again. Engine briefly stuttered twice and I immediately let off. 7. I've ran BM3 91, 93, E30 and MP E50 on my S58 with no issues thus far. 8. Pay to play. Intentions: 1. To make sure we know of any known issues or potential blow ups and how to avoid them. Like the S55 motors crank hub issue - no matter the tune and even stock it broke stuff and was/is really bad design flaw. 2. To have an open discussion on what actually caused the issue. 3. To not have bias, I am not bias or tied to any tune with kickbacks or anything and have had Cobb, JB4, MHD, BM3, and MP. I've enjoyed all of them in different ways. 3. To be honest with each other and nice to enjoy the S58 to it's full potential - kumbaya

I won't post any name as I didn't hear it from them or get permission from them, and I don't have 100% proof. Just trying to bring awareness for us all.

Always comments like this even with any and everything prefaced. You must be fun to hang with. Ever heard of HPFP on N54, crank hub on S55, rod bearings on S85... all stock all are issues that happen with tunes or not. But if tuned you want a focus on them. That's the point...

Wow time flies when you don't visit the forums very often
The aforementioned car would be mine, and I'll raise my hand and say that was my car. Sounds like somebody is spreading rumors and false information to deter a brand of tune, gee I wonder who that can be Regardless for those who are looking for the FACTS, I will lay them out for you quite clearly. 1. I did purchase BM3 back in April of last year, ran the tune for a while and it was fine but not the best... why? Well the octane was never enough for the tune and this was told to me multiple times by BM3. I live in an area where the 93 is pretty damn good... - I used the 93 tune, was told not good enough - I used the 91 tune, was told not good enough - I then was forced to use some E or the ANC tune which was really slow so I used the 91 tune, still had timing pull and had a superknock on one cylinder... cool... 2. Mission Performance comes out with a tune, I purchase this tune. Night and day difference (check the youtube videos) between the BM3 and MP tune. 3. Ran this tune for the entire summer flawlessly but to my own demise, forgot to re-gap spark plugs (whoops). 4. Ran E50 tune for 3 months straight, literally beat every car on the road - E30 BM3 X3M's, Corvettes, RS7's, etc. you name it. 5. One night just doing a fun 60-130 run I felt a hesitation... no codes, no issues but felt something wasn't right and was slightly slower. 6. Took the tune off, drove maybe 20 miles, went to BMW and asked them to check it out for me as it seemed to be down on power and was making a slight tick noise from engine. 7. BMW calls and says your injector seal has gone bad and will replace it as it is a factory defect - UNDER WARRANTY 8. BMW replaces this and they still have the same noise, so they did deeper, found out the injector seal not sealing as it was a factory defect and was causing the injector hole to mar (?) and will require a new cylinder head from Germany. UH OH.... 9. BMW replaces UNDER WARRANTY ($14k+) - it took about 2 months but either way I got the car back, it ran great afterwards and I sold it as I think someone put the engine together on a Friday afternoon at 4 PM. TL : DR - BMW Factory defect caused a replacement of injector and cylinder head. All while running a tune for 6k miles. /Thanks

Oh and I'll answer these too:
Here is what I don't know: 1. Were the plugs gapped to .0024" as required by MP E50 tune? - NOPE, my fault 2. Was the fuel verified to be E50 during each pull or near E50? - Everytime 3. Has anyone else had a blown S58 motor? - Yes, a guy with BM3 blew his motor, and asked me what I did with mine and how I got mine covered under warranty. 4. Is there any log associated with when it blew? - Nope 5. What was the cause or evidence of how it blew? - Faulty injector seal from the factory. 6. Does MissionPerformance know about this? - Yup 7. What was the owner doing when it blew, WOT from 0 MPH or downshift to 7100RPMs in S3 and floor it and not shift gears? - WOT run at a higher speed

GT500R, thanks for sharing. It is a remarkable act of grace on behalf of BMW to perform $14K worth of warranty work while being undoubtedly aware of a tune being present.

Oh they knew, they knew cause I told them and their ISTA system caught it immediately. I know its pay to play, but when its a factory defect that isn't something that the tune caused, you don't need to pay

Thanks for the info! Glad we could get facts before any trolls took this over So now we should all look out for this Did they use the same part numbers or a revised part number upon replacement?

Oh I thought you were talking about the S58 specifically. Seems like a pretty good engine so far (I own 2 of the maintenance hog ones )

crank hub on S55, rod bearings on S85 (not S58 yet although there are some that may have a recall soon), S65 rod bearings, etc.. Now we know there may be an injector issue, but this is the first time we've heard of it and only one car we know of so maybe just a fluke.
