2021 M40i locked with key in trunk

Hi All,

Today I had a very weird experience. Thankfully It was in my underground parking lot at home. I will explain what happened.

I put my keys in the tennis bag kit while I was headed to play tennis. I opened the trunk by kick movement, kept the bags, and press the trunk close button.
I went ahead to open the driver's door by sliding my fingers, while doing I noticed some light flash and realized the boot was open. I went and click the boot/vehicle lock option present on the boot. The vehicle locked itself and all doors. I went ahead to open the driver's side gate which was locked and it was not opening, I realized that I had put the key in the trunk locked along with my tennis bag. I tried everything but the vehicle didn't open.

Luckily I was in my underground parking, I went back to my room brought the spare key, and unlocked it. I was wondering what would have happened if I was not home? For me as it was underground parking so no signal so I could not unlock using the phone. What are the different options if you are locked out?

I am really surprised why did the vehicle got locked with the key inside, this is a very basic safety check, and is really shocked to know that BMW doesn't have this basic feature. Has anyone else faced a similar situation? Please share how did you get out of this ?

It actually mentions it in the owners manual. Do not leave key in cargo area.

Now to what you doing you were not at home, good question.

Well...presumably if you got the phone to a place where it got signal the car would not be able to receive signal in the garage.

You said you pressed the trunk close button and it flashed the lights at you and it was still open?

That may be the warning indicating that the key is not outside of the vehicle.

The first time it didn't close, the next time I clicked it closed and got locked.

The same thing happened to me today. I kicked open the cargo area tailgate, put my gym bag in the cargo area and pressed the close button. The tailgate closed but opened again. I thought there was an obstruction in the back so I moved some things around and pressed the close button again. This time the tailgate closed and LOCKED! Now all my doors are locked and my keys and phone are inside. I thought that was impossible. I went inside and called my local BMW dealer to see if they can remote unlock it. They told me to call roadside assistance which I did and they eventually remote unlocked it.
I'm going to look in my owners manual for what another poster said it tells you not to keep your keys in the cargo area.

My old 2007 nissan maxima that cost a quarter of the price of the m40i would open the trunk automatically if you tried to close the trunk with the key inside of it. It doesn't surprise me that BMW has shit tech like that though, I mean we didn't get remote start until 2022. It'll be a new feature for the next generation car in 2025

Apparently, this can be fixed by updating the I-level to S15A-22-03-500 or higher. Maybe mention this SIB to your dealer for a free update? The current I-level is S15A-22-11-xxx.

“I am really surprised why did the vehicle got locked with the key inside, this is a very basic safety check…”

What about the use case where you are inside (with the key) and you want to lock the doors? Are you suggesting that locking the car should not be possible when you are sitting inside of it?

Happen to me yesterday, I was working on the car in our garage and left the key in the cup holder. Later that day my wife left in our other car and I believe X3 picked the signal from her BMW key in her purse and locked the car as she drove away.
I have the app and digital key so not an issue but apparently it's not that hard to lock the key in the car.

Where do you see that current i-level for S15A in the BMW TIS?

You won't be able to see that in BMW TIS but you can find that in the latest PSdZData (4.38.30 I think).

You are right. The latest is version 530 from Nov 22 release from 4.38.30 program data . Good lord! I'm going in for programming appointment this week, so i want to make sure they are programming with S154A-22-11-530 i-level.

[OT] There is open campaign on DME programming due to some sort of misfiring issue. Trying to get more details about it and whether mine has this open campaign or not.
