ASD - Pull the plug or the fuse?

F97 X3MC model year 2021. Did you pull the amp plug or the fuse? Pro's or con's of either?

Pull the plug, easiest.

- Coding, need to plug-in the OBD2 adapter, open the app. Find the line and code it off.
- Fuse, need to open the trunk liner, find the exact fuse, and pull it out. And hope that you'll remember where you out the fuse to put it back on later.

With the plug, here are the steps:
- Open the driver side cover.
- Find the plug and unplug it.

Which plug is this? Got a pic?

Also, does this need to be plugged back in for dealer software updates like the fuse?

Better to plug it back in so dealer can update the software.

Here is the video that I just uploaded.
Also pictures on where ASD is seated.

So basically the same as the F80, though it looks a lot easier to reach.

Cut my hand once or twice doing it on the F80 lol

If you have small hand, much easier.

It turns out there was a change for model year 2021. My vehicle is the same as the one posted in this link. Anyone have any advise on unplugging a 2021?

There's a long Hx to this topic, and for a full understanding here is the thread from the G01 Forum where it originated: https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1565456

Back when we were considering waiting for the 2021 F97 vs getting a 2020, aside from iD7 and the altered cockpit gauges, the issue came up about the HK system being different. I emailed the Designer and Seller of the ASD bypass harness and he indicated that indeed, the HK amp system was now somehow integrated with the ASD so the latter was no longer a separate unit. He indicated his bypass would not work for the 2021 models. This, along with our desire to maintain the analog appearance of the cockpit lead us to pick up a late model 2020 rather than go for the 2021.

I have not kept up with this thread until just now looking at it on the G01 Forum after seeing your question posted here on our F97 forum, but it would make sense there is no longer any 'plug to pull'. There seems to be some confusion as to whether fuse 218 still works, but a number of posts were shared over there today which seem contradictory.

Might be beneficial to cross-reference this issue as suspect the same sys is being used for the 2021 F97 and G01 models. Please keep posted here to updates on work-arounds for the ASD deletion (if there is one, aside from coding).

Bump...

Anyone figure out how to bypass the ASD on a 2021 X3M yet?

I am taking delivery soon of a 2021MY X3M with a build date in Dec 2020.

I disabled (TechnicPnP bypass harness) the ASD in my 2020 M2 Comp as I hated the fake sound and I am pretty sure I will want to disable it in the X3M.

Thanks

The BMW service guys here were able to 'recode' the car so the ASD is muted. I'm assured it will stay muted...

I don't think my 2021 X3M even has ASD.
- No fake sound coming from the speakers.
- No ASD menu (like the one in my 2021 M40i)
- Disabling via Bimmercode made no difference.

Here's a screenshot from my 2021 M40i where ASD was clearly audible:

This may be a very good thing for us 2021 F97 X3 M owners.

The X3 M40i doesn't have the Exhaust button though. Since the X3M does, perhaps that's why the Engine Sound setting is missing in iDrive?

I just sold my M40i and got my '21 X3MC (yeah!) and my observations on the sound are:

1. With the M40i, 90% of the sound was ASD, 10% was the real engine. I often ran the car with Fuse 218 unplugged (ASD off) and Fuse 203 unplugged (valves always open).

2. With the X3MC, 90% of the sound is the engine, 10% is ASD. I assume there is ASD because when I switch Engine to Sport Plus, the noise in the cabin gets noticeably louder even if I'm not on the gas.

I think the difference there is that the M40i controls the exhaust via drive mode, rather than a dedicated button. In my mind, not enough of a reason to treat ASD differently.

Meantime I'm still dealing with this odd howl/drone coming from my X3M exhaust. The dealer said it will go away on its own, and if necessary they'll have another look at the 1200 mile maintenance.
