Wireless Charger
After some searching it seemed to be a mixed bag on aftermarket/OEM wireless chargers. Thought it was worth the $60 to try the Amazon CarQi charging pad and "installed" today. Seems to charge my IPhone 11 just fine. I'll update if it shits out down the road..

Hello, I'm looking at getting this same charger for my X3. How has it been working for you? Thanks for the help!

Folks, here is what I found out about these charging mats in the storage tray. These mats can plug into either the USB-A port or the 12volt Aux Socket. Depending on which port your mat plugs into will make a large difference in whether you can charge and use the phone or just charge it.
Using the USB-A port the charging mat is limited to about 5W to 7.5W (BMW cliams this port support 1.4amps) depending on phone and how well you can align the coils. Especially for the new Iphones if you're only charging at 5W this is just enough to charge the battery or maintaining the battery if you are using maps and streaming content. The charging will be very slow. If you have a run down battery and you are trying to get it to a usable level in a short period of time these USB-A mats will not do the job especially if you are using the phone at the same time, In order to get to the higher level of charging you need a Pad that plugs into the 12V Aux Socket. These pads run from $89 to $120 and they are not all the same, they look the same and boast various features. They claim to be anywhere from 10W to 30W chargers. Again it depend on the phone, Iphone can only use 15W to fast charge the phone and this is only guarantee for magsafe charging pads on the Iphone 12. All their other phones will charge at 7.5W on a mat like this. These mats should not have a problem charging the phone and running it at the same time. Some of these mats have other USB-A and USB-C ports on them which is where their claim about being 20W or 30W come from but the wireless pad can only deliver between 7.5W for iphones and up to 15 on some Samsung phones. The only downside, is these mats cover the slot between the two cup holders so you can not use handle mug and the charging pad. Lastly, if you need to make sure your phone stays charged and able use it while driving it is best to use the USB-C ports. On the Iphone you will need a MFI USB-C to Lightening cable and this will charge your phone at the fastest rate the phone supports. If it is not MFI, the iphones default to the slowest charging rate. I hope this help, since I spent a couple of hours this weekend sorting this out when I found out we did get the wireless pad on our new X3 and found out its a $500 option from BMW. The couple of X3's we test drove all had the mat and we thought it was standard not realizing it was option. Last edited by Maestro; 02-01-2021 at 04:38 PM.. |

Yes good question, The best I have been able to determine based on the design and how it is fitted and some of the complaint it is running from the USB-A port.

Wireless charging and running apps like music or active nav causes the iPhone at least to overheat. Best to use wired charging.
Running Waze alone is fine if you're not also navigating with it. I haven't tried using the new MagSafe apple chargers to see if they suffer from the same heat issue. |

Is it just me but...wireless charging is very inefficient, it came about to allow charging when the phone isn’t in use. We then beef up the charging current and run heavy apps on the phone. Isn’t this what wired charging does better?

Its not about charging efficiency with wireless. The charging pad in the OP is powered by the usb plug, which is very low amp. It would take 6 hours to charge the phone. There is no point in even installing it. The only one that is worth it is the 12V high power fast charging wireless mat. I bought one, it fully recharges in 1.5 hour.

This is about convenience and not having to deal with cables and Apple would like to remove all ports on the phone if they could. |

Is that compatible only with those who do not have the factory installed wireless charger? I have the wireless charger option but really only got it because I wanted the Enhanced BT, but I would love to be able to install one of these to get fast charging for reasons everyone has stated about the slow charging.
I was looking at Amazon and some of the ones there seemed to imply that it fits over the factory installed wireless charging but I'm skeptical since that would make it so snug for the phone I'm guessing. |

Amazon has so many under a different names which most are same knockoff design its hard to tell which one is actually good. The one you found says 15W which make sense even though not Iphone will charge at 15W only 7.5. Some Samsung phones will charge at 10W or 13W I believe is the high end for them.
