I would have to agree here. If you are set on a 28i I would be looking at 11 or 12 model years as those cars came with the NA N52 inline 6 motor. I have a 2011 with an N52 that I have owned since new and the engine has been great thus far.

how to tell
If you remove the oil fill cover and look inside you can see the timing chain and guide. If the guide is light brown it has NOT been replaced. If is white it HAS been replased. I hope this will help

Am in the market for an X3. Specifically, I'm looking for a NA i6 that's well optioned, or the N55 version. I have previous experience with N54 platform but would love an idea about what I'm possibly getting into. |

i was advised by a friend who is a BMW Master tec @ my dealer and he told me it a great ride so I bought mine used with 104k miles I have had it only 6 month and I am very happy with it. I have been driving a 328i convertible for 16 years and although it is a sweet ride i love the x3

There is not a lot of info on the forums on these cars, I think because few owners do their own repairs/service compared to sedan owners. But suffice to say after driving (used) BMW sedans for 15 years and doing a lot of my own work I did my homework before I bought the X3 and they seem to be pretty darn solid cars, sure there is the odd owner here and there who has had a wheel bearing, tranny or transfer case go kaput, but VERY few/far between. Get the car inspected by a mechanic and of course check the accident history - that is always a wise thing to do when buying any used Bimmer. Good luck/ Bill |
