iDrive / GPS update

I have a 10 days old X3 M40i. The car is 2019 model.

I checked the GPS map, it is dated 2018-02.
So it is over a year old.

Not sure about iDrive version.

I see some post people talk about download update from BMW, but I can't seem to find way to download any update from BMW.

Can I request dealer to update the software if my car doesn't come with the latest version?

To update maps you have to go to connected drive - remote cockpit - control - and scroll down to map update
From here you should be able to download the bmw download manager and the maps

If you can't, welcome to the club of recent buyers who can not get their maps updated, like me and Rik762

You can go to the dealer with a usb drive, they load the maps there and you update them. This should be free of charge.

To update in the future, you have to fight customer service probably for weeks or months...

When I bought my 2019 X4 it automatically notified me of an over the air NAV update it had received and wanted to apply after about an hour into my drive home.

OTA (local) updates are no problem with this fault. It is The full area USB updates that are unavailable.

OP, yes, you can contact the dealer to make the update. It should be cost free.

I just checked, under Connected Drive, there is no Remote Caokpit.

I checked every item in the menu, it doesn't look like it can do OTA update, all I see is USB.

I think I will have to ask dealer , when I bring it in for service.

You guys need this:
BMW Download Manager (www.bmw.com/update), on first screen you just login with your credentials and enter VIN to find a car.
Then select a car from your garage and download will start immediately.
Afterwards, program will ask to copy downloaded artifact to your USB (must be 64 gigs).
Finally, put USB to your car (next to wireless charger) and that's it!

Thanks mariopl , this is the normal way, yes. But my car is greyed out in download manager and an error appears.

It is worth sorting out how to update map on your own rather than via dealer as there is an update every Qtr.

However OP congrats on the new car. Let's see some pics.

checked the www.bmw.com/update, put in my VIN number and it told me there is no update?
But I see my GPS is 2018-02 version.

Anyone in US / Canada know how the update work?
I have no OTA update option in iDrive.

This is great. Not only does the system not work but it doesn't work in so many different ways. Very inventive are BMW.

That site is nothing to do with maps it's generally to update Bluetooth system to work with latest phones but seems to be a legacy site for older models

If you can't do USB or OTA updates only way is to get dealer to do it for you

Have you checked your build date? Could explain why you have a old map if car has been around a while

mdecoder.com or similar sites should tell you what week it was built

In the USA, regional map updates are available free for 3 years. After that, you will need to pay a small ransom to update.

So how do you actually receive the map update? I reread the thread and understand the USB for updates but don't understand the map update like lo cheng asked about.

What people are talking about is the BMW Connected Drive portal, that you have to login to with your computer. From there you should see all services that you might have booked for your car, including free map updates for a couple of years. Unless that is not in your market, it I assume it is.

For those regions (US), where Over-the-air updates are available, you have to set your region first in the portal. For others l, here is where we can download the BMW download manager, and within that, login again to connected drive, type in your vin, and then it will figure out of you are allowed to download a map, and which map your car should have.

If this is not working for you, log a case with connected drive support.

Thanks for the reply.

That's my 2nd issue, I still contacting BMW trying to fix the issue of my car not showing up in BMW Connect portal.

After I login, it said "Your vehicle data could not be loaded, please click on load vehicale data and try again"

I just hang up with them again and she told me she have no idea.

I may have to go to dealer, but for some online account problem???

As far as the map OTA updates... did you verify your information in the ConnectedDrive portal? This is what I had to do, now they pop up all the time!

https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.my/app/index.html
https://connecteddrive.bmwusa.com/app/index.html

Once logged in, scroll to the bottom of the homepage and you should see
"Map update
Edit settings of the Automatic Map Update feature."

...click "details"... then verify you select the right region you are in, once you save this give it 24 hours and the update prompt should pop up..

good luck!
