Can we retrofit an autodimming mirror with homelink?
I'm considering this mod. I currently have just the basic mirror. Is it a direct plug and play?
Things to consider would be rain sensing, power for the homelink and compass as well as the autodim function. Any ideas? |

Was it an offered feature at the time? If so it should be mostly if not completely pre wired from the factory

From my experience, in the past BMW had 2 pre-wirings:
One for bare cars mostly sold in E.U. and these were hard to retrofit. The other cars had all the wiring done. Mostly sold in N. America. These you could just add the desired options and just plug & play. Some you need coding, but not many. In the past I purchased 2nd hand BMW's that had a bunch of features and then I just added other things, the wires being here, tucked in. On some models, you had to replace some blanked off panels with other panels that had the cutout and the module you needed/wanted. Currently I own 4 different BMW series. All 4 have auto-dimming mirrors. 2 of these cars are garaged so I need HomeLink. The F25 has HomeLink and is auto-dimming. So it's an almost sure bet the wiring is there. On my e92, I had also both features, I had to change the garage door opener because after a gazillion years of use the door opener board got fried. The new garage door opener is a new generation rolling code, and the e92 is a 2011 year model, and the HomeLink didn't work anymore with the new door opener. I had a choice of ordering a sort of a bridge, I reserched on line - and it was hit-and-miss with that gizmo. Plus the cost was high in my opinion. I purchased form e-bay an identical looking mirror from a 2012 5 series BMW, and did the transplant of the HomeLink board. Final cost was 5 bucks: I sold the 5 series mirror with my old HomeLink locally to someone who did not need the new rolling code feature. Both mirrors had the identical shell indentations inside to accept all the boards. Even the old HomeLink board vs the new board were identical. The only difference was the new board had 3 wires as opposed to 2 wires for the old. But both mirrors had the 3 wires terminal to plug in. No coding necessary, it just worked right away. 0.02

You can add homelink without coding. The issue is the wiring at the mirrors outside... The are 2 independent harnesses. One for hearing and the other for dimming... There are connected to the sensor in the issue mirror... If you have tinted windows, it will not work correctly...
