Turbo go bye bye
Well, it finally happened. Blew the turbo on my N55 last night after a meet. Everything was running like butter but on the way home I took a pull and got hesitation at the top of third.
Towing to BMW and hoping they work with me, I'm still within the CPO warranty. If everything but the turbo checks out, I will likely go PS1. Curious if there's any other offering that fit our chassis though. Not looking for the power or turbo lag that PS2 brings.

Fearful mine is on the way out also. I flashed my stock tune and put on my stock downpipe. Taking my car to the dealer this week in hopes of a new turbo! If they wont warranty it i'm gonna go PS2

Is there any evidence to support the notion that an aftermarket turbocharger will last as long with a tune as a original turbocharger would on an un-tuned car? |

Yes, but it's boost season in CO. Glad I waited to install the new one, it'd be full of oil right now

The PS2 turbos are built for some abuse. I'm sure they are equally safe with a proper tune as a stock turbo on stock tune.

I'm not nearly as confident that an aftermarket setup like this would be as reliable at HPDEs when a car is being shared in back to back session. Potentially 40+ minutes of driving the car at its limit. My personal observations at the track are that powertrain modified cars that are making substantially more power than stock powertrain cars are inherently less reliable and experience issues far more frequently. |

I think that will always be the case. Modified cars will always be less reliable. From everything I have seen and experienced, Pure turbos are about as reliable as you can hope for but anytime you make more power over stock you're much more likely to kaboom

Strange that the turbo went so early on your car. My old 335 N54 was tuned stage 2.5 with OFT for 65k miles on stock turbos with downpipes, never an issue with turbos. I sold it at 92k and the guy after me still beat on it for a while.

I agree, and I think this would have happened regardless of the tune and was just waiting to happen. Fortunately everything else on this engine has been rock solid, so if that's my only problem before the water pump goes out I'll be pleased.

HA, funny you say that. You see all these 22yo's buying first gen 335's, cranking the JB4 to max bragging about how they're as fast as an m3 then wondering why their 2007 $5000 used 335i with 150k miles blew a turbo in two weeks.

If it was as easy as a tune to make a 335i produce M3 levels of power with the same reliability, factory engineers, who are real engineers (not your driveway mechanics), would have already done so.

Nah, just once it cools down, so roughly October-March. In summertime it's wicked easy to get heatsoak on the stock IC and a stock tune alone.

Update: Definitely a turbo failure. Dealership is taking apart and said if they find any reason my aftermarket parts caused it, they cannot warranty. At this point it sounds like we're good (though I'm still cautious).
I don't think a BMS intake, FTP chargepipe, and VRSF downpipe would cause a turbo failure

If you unplugged the battery before you brought it in it would hide most if not all evidence of a tune. I do that anytime I bring the the car in just for good measure. If they try and say anything about the hardware you could definitely argue that all of that actually makes it much easier on the turbo. Not having to fight through a cat and an intake to help it breathe all makes its job easier. I doubt they will get screwed.
My dealer is very cool about mods. I went there once to get tires on (breaking my own rule, I had my tune on) and basically I had half of the sales team, two service advisors, and the majority of techs admiring my SUV shooting flames! I called my advisor the other day to see if I could get my turbo looked at for the hissing sound and he said its probably going to have to be replaced under warranty! The dealers (In my experience) don't like to screw their customers plus they typically prefer warranty work because they get paid internally and its just less of a headache. Quote:

I think the SAs at this dealership are pretty easy on mods though. Should have her up and running tomorrow.
