BMW Connected app update: Remote Software Updates
I just received the update for the BMW Connected app and noticed several new major features in the description list. This one in particular I’m crossing my fingers will work as it is described. This may the future of in-car software updates. I haven’t finished downloading the update but am hopeful it actually works.

Have you ever had the call from the service department that goes, "Sorry we can't get you your car back today. We started an update and it failed. The car's bricked and we'll have to try it overnight."?
I have and while BMW is clearly trying to catch up to Tesla here, I doubt they have the infrastructure and systems in place to do as Tesla has been so successful at doing in OTA updates. BMW can't even reliably deliver map updates so I have no faith they'll update the car correctly OTA.

ny displeasure in the past with BMW being so far behind in tech. However, these updates I’m assuming are specifically for idrive which are a lot smaller in size and not updating other modules in the car. So the likelihood of of complete system failure would be unlikely. To answer your question, I have had the call informing the updating of car firmware has crashed and had to re-started. One more thing, over the air map updates does work, I have seen it work as intended on my personal vehicles while others have on the new x3 as well. I believe what comes into question is the frequency at which these updates are pushed out. |

https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/29/bm...gets-it-right/ Update: just to clarify, the update with Alexa functionality will be available for all BMW's that were produced after about March 2018.

Let's hope folks who have post-March 2018 builds update their BMW Connected apps to see if Control My Home works for them now.

No Apple HomeKit support, but who cares, I can talk to Siri with a long press of the steering wheel button, and she can control almost every light/door/lock in my house. I don't think anything BMW can shoehorn into existing cars can come close to that integration.

Take your car to the dealer and get some help getting it resolved. I’m not making excuses for BMW or defending them by any means. I’ve actually harped on the lack of tech and inconsistency in software for years. But what I am saying is that perhaps when BMW announces a new feature, we give it a chance to prove itself useless or lacking before flaming them for even trying.

Not at all. But I've owned BMWs since 2006 and not once in all that time has everything worked on any version of iDrive. They have a track record — and it's terrible.

For those interested in possible new features and updates rather than being salty or bitter, the connected app now display the access point for the Smart Things home feature. I’m including pics below along with a picture of the connected drive store loaded with all of my services and expiration dates.
