Dog fence in back, possible?

I'm considering a 2018 X3 as now the new version has enough room for my dogs in back. Question is, does there exist an aftermarket (I don't see anything from BMW) fence to keep the dogs from going over the top of the back seat?

I have an 80 pound black lab and though he's not a very good driver, that hasn't stopped his enthusiasm for a climb up front to at least help with driving. Consequently a barrier of some sort would be very helpful.

I don't know, if you can get in Us, but it's called Luggage-compartment separating net, code 413, description:
Quote:
- can be fitted behind the second row of seats
- two attachment points on the roof edge including storage bag. pic from brochure.
With the Luggage compartment separating net, it is possible to make full use of the generously-sized luggage compartment without having to individually secure the various objects. The risk of objects flying forwards in the case of a crash or even hard braking is eliminated. The separating net also provides pet owners with a good alternative for safely transporting animals such as dogs. This equipment includes a small net for use when all the rear seats are upright, as well as a large net that can be attached behind the front seats when all the rear seats are folded down. Four sturdy fastening points are discreetly anchored in the roof support bar.

Yeah, I never found a BMW OE dog barrier for the rear seat headrests and cargo area for our previous X5s (E70, F15). Haven't seen any for the X3, but haven't really looked hard. Besides, we've given up to regulating our boy to the cargo area, bc like you, he can't stand being away from us and won't relax until he is up front with us. So now we just keep him in the rear seats.

Here he is making sure everyone is following the rules of the road!!

LOL that's a great pic! I have a 7 year old golden who loves ride shotgun. On the other hand, my 4-month old pup is not even close to being ready for the X3. Way too many surfaces for her to scratch or chew on.

I had one of them in my X5. worked fine on my larger dog, but the smaller one could get around it - he liked to ride on the passenger's lap.

There were two sets of attachment points - one for the seats folded down the other for the seats up

I just checked my X3 and the attachment points are not there - they would need to be added. I presume that would be in the kit.

I can see the parts on the EU parts list but not as a retrofit - perhaps it will come later. Nor do I see it in the catalog.

dog free since 2012. don't like watching them die so I'll never have another. wish I had the time to get one though! I love dogs!

I was looking for seat covers for after the gym and stumbled across this. not a direct fix for your question, but could be a different solution...

In Switzerland dog crates are used in the back. They are specially shaped to fit in the back of a "combi" - station wagon or an SUV. The Swiss version of the AAA tests them for safety, comfort and ease of cleaning.

Here is a quick video (in French) on the latest round.

https://www.tcs.ch/fr/tests-conseils...-de-chiens.php

I will speak with my local BMWCC to see if they are interested in doing a group buy.

On my 2011 X3 I ordered the retractable cargo net that would roll up in place in the cargo area or you could remove it, fold down the seats and slide it in two metal clips on the seat backs and then roll it up to the roof. It was such a hassle I stopped using it. I'm lucky my dog sleeps on road trips in the back seat. Yes I know he should be properly restrained.

The US models don't have the attachments points for the net. I got so used to using the rollaway version of it for my dog in my 3er Touring which comes with it standard. I guess BMWNA figures dog owners buy wagons and not CUVs?

Adding this option should add also the attachment points, if I understand the description correctly. But still, if you can't spec it in order, than it's another thing you don't get in US:

Travall Dog Gate

Reviving this dated thread to say…installed dog gate in the G01. Went with Travall brand (G01 model is: TDG1602); it appears to be well built and is custom fit for the X3. The fit points are around the windows with the vertical poles (they are hooks actually) providing added stability. So far we are much happier with this than the ‘one size fits all’ variety that we have had in previous vehicles.

Only a couple downsides that we’ve noticed so far: 1) The rear seat reclining amount may be limited. I wasn’t familiar enough with how much the rear seats reclined before installing so I can’t say how much the dog gate limits this functionality. 2) The hooks don’t play nicely with our X3 cargo mat (lower photo). If we had gotten the Weathertech mat then there would have been well marked areas to cut for access, oh well. At least we can slide the X3 mat down slightly and it doesn’t affect the rear door from closing.

The downsides don’t come anywhere close to offsetting the quality and fit of the dog gate and we are happy with the purchase.

Questions?

I’ve had the Travall guard in my last few cars, but on my G01 I went with the genuine BMW one. It’s sturdier than the Travall, is black rather than silver, so looks much nicer. It also uses the hooks on the back of the rear seats. The other bonus is that the legs sit on top of the BMW cargo mat.

Ah, had I known before I ordered the Travall then I might have changed my mind. What is the part number for the BMW dog gate?

I’m not sure, but your dealer should e able to hook you up. Let me know if you get stuck, and I’ll dig out my paperwork.

No worries. We are happy with the Travall. I couldn't find anything on the bmwusa website when I was searching (and I didn't ask the dealership).

Do you happen to have a part # for the genuine BMW product? I cannot locate it.

Hello John, thanks for the great post. I've had a couple of Travall dog guard in our BMW's, and they have all been great fit and quality. I was wondering if by any chance you could update us on whether the vertical support posts interfere with the seat backs reclining?

If they do, how many degrees would you say? Ideally, if you can estimate how many degrees the seats can normally recline, then it would be good to have an idea how much, if any, the posts prevent a recline to the maximum allowable.

I haven't yet picked up my car, but thanks to our super shedding dog, I'm thinking ahead! They seem to recline quite a bit from this video:
