Ez pass
Just wondering if anyone has the external ezpass in NY? I seen some people who have them and they look pretty good, very low profile. The white little box always bugged me on my windshield, I know they sell ezpass cases with suction cups etc, I actually sprayed mine with a rubberized coating and used black Velcro strips to mount, you barely notice it now.
Attached pic of external pass, will add a pic of my sprayed pass later

I personally don't run it. I used my moms car though which has that and it works very well. Much more hidden. I wanted to change mine out but I wasn't too worried about it

Not in NY, but I have an external transponder on my M235i. Has to go on the front of the plate here (and the only way it can work on the plate mount on my car anyway). Works great, triggers gated tollbooths noticeably sooner than the windshield mount ones do.

How did you guys obtain the "externals"?, I hear the ezpass office is pretty reluctant to give these up, but I haven't actually tried myself, here's a pic of mine that I sprayed

Yikes! Here in Florida we are so blessed to not have to have a front plate! My girlfriend set up the sunpass acct for our toll roads and she has a transponder in her car, but she put my car into the system and I don't have to have anything in my car. Lol. Just run right through em and never get a bill! I think maybe it throws an alarm at first but then verifies the picture it gets of my plate with its database and says "oh, that bimmers cool, right here it is"

Definitely sucks! And Florida also has a lot of cool vanity plates to choose from, besides no front plate you don't have to put two ugly stickers on front windshield(registration and inspection)

The latest revision EZ Pass transponders for inside the windshield are about half the size of the boxes shown by udm328i.
That said, when I moved to MA I had to relinquish my white box for an ugly orange one when it was still FastLane or something as they were being bought out by EZ Pass. I always had mine mounted so it was out of my line-of-sight hidden (from me) by the rearview mirror. Didn't help the outside-in view though. Now EZ Pass won't let you trade it in for the smaller one unless it doesn't work (hmm...) |

My suction thing broke so I acted *** and waved it with my hand, until it misread a few times (can't afford that cuz it causes me to lose my monthly discount). I don't feel like gluing the Velcro so I just place it on the dash as I approach the bridge, has never failed. No need to overthink imho

In Maine the external is yours for the asking, it just costs $17.50 instead of $10. They do have a list of cars that require the external, mostly those with metallic film windshields.

I have the small white one, which I hold by hand when passing tolls. That happens once in a while, so Im not glueing the thing to my windshield.
Down in PR they get use a sticker instead of a box. Wish we got that too. |

I have the little white box, as you call it, and never attached it to my windshield because I sometimes use it in my wife's X3 (or she will borrow it when using the PA Turnpike). I just keep it in my glove box and take it out before I need it, then hold it up against the windshield as I'm driving through the toll booth. No big deal.

As long as your plate is in the CheEZPass system, you get billed by the plate. How else would electronic tolling work where there are no toll booths.....it takes about a week to process from my experience. If someone is suggesting they simply drive through without anything, I call BS. Yeah, the MTA is willing to let a $16 toll just slip through the cracks, 5X per week. And I woke up and Trump was President.
