Safety features disabled by BMW
I just learned that all of my 2011 335is safety features have been disabled by BMW. They say the hardware is incompatible now. So no more Door Unlock, crash notification, SOS assistance, etc. And they didn't even notify us of this?
The safety features that I purchased and paid for are simply disconnected by BMW, and we're left to fend on our own? Unbelievable! Anyone else? |

Quoted from "My BMW" website...
My phone call to BMW confirmed that these features are no longer active.... ------------------------------------------------------------- BMW Assist™ Safety Plan Your guardian on the road. At BMW, the safety and security of the driver is always a top priority. BMW Assist™ provides safety services that connect you with our BMW Assist™ Response Center, any time, day or night. To initiate the service, just push the SOS button from within your vehicle. After a serious accident, a call is initiated automatically. The system then transmits your location and other vehicle data information to a response specialist who will help resolve your situation. BMW Assist™ also includes stolen vehicle recovery services, which could reduce your comprehensive insurance premium while increasing your peace of mind. And if you ever get locked out, door unlock service can be requested with just a toll-free call. MyInfo allows you to send business listings and street addresses found in Google Maps™ directly to your BMW. Our car must have gotten the memo, but acted alone in disabling the functions itself a few months ago. It reminds us every time we get into it by announcing,
SOS system malfunction, no phone installed...... |

Wait that doesn't make sense.... the service should still be available for 2013 and newer vehicles:
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ndearlier.aspx If they disabled Assist for all 2013 and newer cars, that would mean everything from a bunch of F30s to the 1 series would lose their service. Are you sure your service just didn't run out? After 4 years, you have to start paying $199 yearly to have it. I'd be really shocked if they just nixed all of those people with BMW assist like that; plus, the liability in doing something like that so unexpectedly to a safety system would be tremendous. That would mean they trashed their entire original infrastructure. Now, there was a period of time that Assist ran off of the analog cell network, and that would no longer work. I don't think the E90 was in that era. I would expect the E46 to be analog-based since it came out in 1999, but not the E90. |

Apparently pre-2014 models use communication technology (2g? 3g? CDMA?) that is being phased out. BMW will no longer let you renew your plan. Existing plans will continue to receive service through December 31, 2016. As of Jan 1, 2017, service will be terminated.
No word yet what will happen if you have a plan that goes into 2017, or if there will be a hardware upgrade available. I think this is what OP was talking about. I'm surprised that they are phasing out service on cars this new. I remember when OnStar phased out analog service, but it was on much older cars. |

Well, looks like I'll be doing the NBT mod in 2017. The retrofit doesn't work with SOS anyway. |

SOS is a subscription service after warranty.

However all the safety hardware should work as it normally would in any car. It just won't call BMW. |

Seriously, if BMW disables SOS and we have to get an SOS warning every single time we get in the car, that's fucking absurd. At least release a software update to remove it. I'm gonna talk to SOS today about it and see what they say about the whole sitch.

Yep, won't work after this year. No more sending Google map locations to my car. I use that feature all of the time.
