if they are talking about replacing the oil filter housing, which would surprise me because there should be very little that can go wrong there and I have never heard of them failing, then you could be in the ball park given dealer rates. However, if its just the oil filter gasket, it gets changed everytime you change the oil so it should be like 50 cents.

2011 X3 35i now at 62K miles had the leaking oil filter housing replaced under warranty at 44K miles. Took a week to get the part.
A week later the belt tensioner pulley bearing failed, loud screeching noise. Tech said that oil leaking from the oil filter housing compromised the lubricant in the pulley bearing and caused the failure. All repaired under warranty, no charge. |

I'm told that it's often an issue with the 35i engine. I've had mine done, out of warranty. I remember the cost as being a bit less than that, but I get a 15% BMWCCA discount from my dealer.
I wish that I had known to look for it while I was still in warranty. |

Damnit! Was hoping the leak was from the O ring. I am going to do an oil change myself & change O ring to see if this would stop the leaking but from what I'm reading on this post looks to me The filter gasket housing is the issue! FML!

49512 miles experienced the same fate. while cleaning the car I noticed oil residue on the front of the engine. I cleaned the engine in attempt to isolate the source, and took it to the dealer. Dealer replaced the filter housing under warranty. Would advise folks to be on the lookout for excess oil around the engine bay especially those above 40k miles.

"Around the engine bay" is key, in this case on the engine block below the oil filter. You're unlikely to find anything on the driveway under your X3, as the aerodynamic panels underneath the engine will catch just about everything. I think it's unlikely that you're going to find a "wet spot" under your X3 from any type of fluid leak.

Common issue on many BMWs. I've replaced this in my 08 335i and in a 03 X5 3.0i. Usually all before 75k miles.

I had the same issue
But when I got the quote from my dealer It said there were 2 gaskets So I bought the parts and decided to tackle it myself, since the dealer wanted $1200! The gasket between the housing and the engine is very time consuming to replace Since there is one bolt that will require you to remove the intake manifolds So I said screw it, will just replace the front gasket That's the one between the housing and the oil cooler That was much easier But you will lose some oil, and some coolant in the process After I finished the work, I topped up both fluids And sprayed a lot of degreaser, and cleaned the entire area to see if I still had the leak 4 months later, area is still clean So in my case it was the front gasket, not the expensive to replace rear gasket Worth a shot to try that one first Part was like $20
