Icy Roads ahead indicator???

Over New Year's I was up in the mountains. I'd been driving up the grade and then made it to the turn-off to the cabin. When I paused to make the left, a yellow triangle with a snowflake-looking thing appeared. I had to get the manual out to see that the car was warning me that there might be icy roads ahead.
I'm in Cali, does that thing go off in all those places that normally have hibernating animals buried under the snow?
Any explanation on how it determines to warn me that there might be ice? I think the outside temp was 39 F, and it had been raining most of the day.

It's set off by the outside temp.
In Europe it's set off at 3 degrees C.

That's a temperature warning, not a icy roads. It pops up when the temperature drops to a certain degree.

The manual said specifically for icy roads. I'm still assuming I actually saw a yellow one, not a red one. Red was something about the transmission, pull over and call BMW NA for a ride.

Yes, 37 degrees is about the temperature when ice will start to form on roads. The warning is hence warning you that you're at a temperature where there may be icy roads.

German engineering at its worst -- I know it's freakin' cold out. Do I really need the car pestering me just as I'm backing out of the garage?

It IS for icy roads, not a temperature warning. It's not warning you that you might need a sweater when you go outside. It is warning you that at this temperature, there is a liklihood of ice on the roads. It's not sensing actual ice - just telling you that the outside temperature is conducive for it.

Seeing the yellow triangle with the snowflake first thing EVERY morning is getting a bit tedious. Wish there was a way to turn it off. Maybe in April it will go away.

Think of it this way: when it stops appearing, it means summer is near!

Not just in Europe, but everywhere it is 3°.

I think it accomplishes what it sets out to do: alert the driver that conditions are such that roads may be slippery and icy.

I am with you. Our streets have been under permafrost since mid-December; I don't need Hans telling me to watch out for ice as I slide up my driveway and skiddaddle to work.

I think the warning shouldnt go off when you start the car. If you start and its sub 37, then its probably winter, and no shit there is ice outside. If you are driving, and it drops below, then you should get the warning.

This indicator does help those who do not expect black ice on the road everyday. It helps keep the driver alert. Just a safety feature and it has been in all BMW's for at least more than 10 years.
