Those who have gotten aftermarket windshield replacements, do you notice a difference
I have a giant unfixable crack in my windshield from a random rock and need to get my windshield replaced (the crack is slowly growing too). The problem is the BWM dealer wants $2500 to do it. So I called a reputable mobile service from a mutual friend and he’ll do it for $1100 but using a brand called Fuyao. Any of you who replaced your windshield with an aftermarket one, did you notice any difference in wind noise or HUD quality or anything else?

Fuyao is the original supplier, IIRC.

Correct.
FYI-Even though Fuyao is the OEM manufacture,if your vehicle is a lease you may want to consider making sure the Fuyao windshield you get says BMW in the lower left corner instead of Fuyao. Had my X3 windshield replaced by Safelite () and they gave me that option, which I was not aware of.

Doesn't your insurance cover the cost of a new OEM windshield....minus a deductible?

This. Glass replacement usually falls under comprehensive, which shouldn't raise your rates.

can't speak for the HUD but just replaced my son's m340 windshield... I have progressive and there was no charge... they don't need to raise premiums for this, they are raising them like crazy anyhow so it's the least they can do.
back on subject. used safelite and they did a great job, and calibrated it perfectly, and gave me the print out so I could see it. he also said their brand of NON OEM is the same brand that makes many of the OEM anyhow. the only concern would be HUD which I don't have in that car so can't speak to that but otherwise the aftermarket glass is perfect

Second windshield, albeit installed by an official dealership, will never be of such quality as the original one. I had two experiences, during the first I agreed to mount new windshield outside a dealership (now I know why - the insurance company saved A LOT by convincing me). The windshield didn't have the original (car) manufacturer badge on it, yet it was mounted by a company that specializes on it.
The second time at another car, I insisted on mounting an original part at dealership. The windshield is heated. Never mind the first car, but this second... even though it has the badge, I have quite severe demage from dust under the wipers, I've never seen such thing, except for neglected cars and wipers. My wipers were like 1,5 y.o. and in perfect contact with the windshield. My summary: The original at factory mounted windshield is of the best quality. It's quite sure someone will break it especially out of missing rear skirts, take it as certain. Have your car insured for this case and insist on mounting an original part (which will still be inferior). |
