Did you go through check all of car's functions before (near) the end of warranty?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Most of the 2019 owners here in the forum should be getting their warranty expire, soon. For the 2018 owners, over. Anyone gone through all the features, functions before the warranty expires? Maybe it's just good idea. Case in point recently found out my TCB wasn't cutting over to the 4g. Had to make dealer service trip to get that taken care of to get back to using BMW Assist. Of course, i'm assuming you are checking for faults as well. |

I did most of the obvious items, a few weeks prior to the end of the warrantee I received an Email from my BMW dealer offering a free check of all the vital components that I took up, steering, brakes, exhaust system etc. etc.

Good idea to do a self-check of operations yourself. Focusing on things like how well everything looks and works. Any paint issues, problems with fitment, things not working 100% (like AC not cold enough), etc. While the dealer service check will uncover certain things, they are not likely to go beyond the diagnostics the check points out.
Also, might be good to set your timeframe a little more advanced. Getting service appointments is difficult these days. Also, you might need to have some back and forth. Give yourself enough time. |

how many wrong things did they find with your car? I feel like these inquiries are just to suck money out of people on stuff that doesn't need to be fixed/messed with.

I would check whether there are PCV and coolant leak issues. PCV failure and coolant leaks were pretty common in B46/B48/B58 engines. I'm not sure if that's still the case in the TU engines.
If the PCV failed, you will see engine oil on cylinder 1 spark plug and the rest of the spark plugs should be dry. Since the oil separator is sitting right above cylinder 1, a failure there will cause engine oil to leak into the cylinder 1 spark plug well. So just take off the spark plugs and see if cylinder 1 spark plug is considerably wetter than the others. It's not an easy DIY to change the cylinder head cover since it involves taking out all the fuel injectors. I've also seen many cases of coolant leaking from those brittle coolant lines, coolant pump support, and oil filter housing assembly. So maybe check them too. |

Give your self time to get on the schedule, and leave time for follow-up repair appts to the extent something is found under warranty. Thought I'd left enough time / mileage prior to end of warranty on my Ram, so while they were doing pre-expiration inspection I asked them an innocuous question about a power driver seat issue I'd noticed - which led to over 6 months of multiple visits / root cause diagnoses / part orders (slowed by pandemic supply chain issues) / attempted repairs. Luckily, the service team "tolled" my repair situation such that even though the factory started bitching about my truck being out of warranty period, they handled everything at no charge - once they finally figured out the real issue. Ya can't always rely on dealer good will these days. Cheers~

I'm going to fiddle with all user accessible functions, features, etc.
Case in point, i don't know what this thing does on parking brake button called "auto hold"? I'll find out, one by one. It's like an easter egg hunt... |

I must be too old to even understand this, but okay ... not putting your foot on the brake when at (fully) stopped, on an automatic car with gear in drive... Are people just getting too lazy or is for convenient sake? who knows...

There's a good chance I'm older than you and actually, I find it quite convenient for waiting at a long traffic light or when traffic is really backed up - accident construction delay, that sort of thing. You turn it on and off literally with the push of a button.

The "auto hold" is esp. convenient when you are stuck in stop/go traffic and don't want to have to sit there with your foot on the brake once stopped. YMMV Cheers~

If you drive in stop-n-go traffic on a regular bases…I could see it being used more often. COVID also had me reactivating ASS (auto stop/start), too. They both work together…you stop, the car brakes, then engine turns off…then when its time to move…all you do is press the accelerator. The car restarts, the brakes turn off and you move forward like magic….all repeating as you inch forward. The only caveat was the ASS woudn’t activate if the steering wheel is turned….but as long as the wheels were straight…the engine would cut off. BTW, there may even be an “animated explanation” in the embedded owners manual in iDrive.

Curious about the 6MT not having hill hold. I do not have any experience with newer BMW MT, but our '09 335i xDrive has hill hold and it always came in handy when visiting Seattle (like SF and Rome, built on 7 hills). When I had a Subaru WRX 5MT, I would turn off hill hold, cuz it made it much more challenging to do hill starts with hill hold engaged. Cheers~

I grew up in the Bay Area and considered my driving education complete when I drove to San Francisco and successfully drove around in a car with a manual transmission.

I had hill hold in my 6MT Audi S4. Although it was manually activated via the electronic parking brake.
