Automatic idle state
The manual says, "Automatic idle state
The idle state is automatically established under the following conditions: After several minutes, if no operation takes place on the vehicle...." This seems to happen in about 10 minutes for me. My problem is that I sometimes want to listen to the sound system while I am outside the car, perhaps doing some detaining operation. Using BMW terminology, I want it to remain in standby state for a longer period. The manual for standby state says, "Desired settings can be adjusted", but I don't know how to do any such thing. Is there some way that I can lengthen the timeout period? Alternatively, what is the minimum operation that is required to reset the timeout period? Thanks.

You could try diagnostic mode (three quick presses of start button without touching brake pedal). In theory it shouldn't time out, as that would risk shutting off in the middle of using diagnostic or coding tools (i.e. Bimmercode) through the ODB port.
