BMW X3 xDrive30e First Drive Review

Road Show has posted a first drive review of the X3 xDrive30e.

2020 BMW X3 xDrive30e first drive review: A plug-in SUV with no shortage of sport

The first plug-in X3 scrimps on neither efficiency nor sportiness.

Some review highlights:

It's not often that a test-drive of a plug-in hybrid takes place on a handling course on an disused runway. But when that hybrid has a BMW badge on the nose, like the X3 xDrive30e, you know the engineers have put as much effort into sportiness and fun as thriftiness and efficiency. It's for that reason that the first plug-in hybrid X3 makes such a good first impression on a brief test drive near Munich, Germany.

The X3 shares its hybrid powertrain with the 330e sedan, which means the core components consist of a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine, an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission and a 12.0-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack under the rear seat. Total system output is 252 horsepower, with the 0-62-miles-per-hour run pegged at 6.5 seconds and top speed set at a healthy 130 mph. The electric motor is rated for 80 kilowatts, equivalent to 107 hp, which is just a bit behind the 330e's motor rating of 83kw.

While far from the ideal location for testing a plug-in hybrid, the X3 xDrive30e shines on a runway handling course at the BMW Experience Center in Maisach, Germany. With the Sport drive-mode button depressed, power is effortless and easy, hauling the crossover out of corners and down straights. Like any X3, it's a handler, too, with crisp turn-in and well-controlled body motions as I slip through a coned-off slalom.

I could see this eSUV doing well. As far as the performance and handling, I guess that's a bonus. I mean since its a BMW you have to have that as part of the DNA

It's great, but the fully Electric X3 is going to be an absolute game changer for BMW.

Why, it's only a halfbaked product, the flipside of the i3! Like EQ and e-tron, it's basicly an ice which are electrified! Cheap and not a genuin product like Tesla, i-pace and their own i3.

When is the hybrid on the marked?!
BMW is losing out as long as they hold back like they are.

When it's full electric I will buy one.

Not any sooner.

give it a rest guys. Full electric is a niche and impractical. I would rather mate a 3l turbo with a super battery with ludicrous performance encased in a super chassis in an elegant vehicle(with a sensible grille).
Btw my Mrs(blonde) thinks model x looks like a costlier prius and model s welll looks like a mondeo.

The germans are not making a EV from the ground up, which means that competing against Tesla, they are wasting Even more time coming up with vehicles that are ice made, cheap garbage!!!

Agreed.

I will buy the Model Y most likely instead.

Germany is going to take it in the shorts big time.

Maybe increase your post count elsewhere.

Electric is the future regardless of how you see the world.

"...to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport by bringing compelling mass market electric cars to market as soon as possible."

Pretty sure the new CLAR platforms were designed with E.V. in mind.

Let's not try and say they're simply just slapping a battery and motor on an ICE chassis.

in the Spanish forum there is a very dissapointed owner of an X5 40e. The battery lasts for 20 kms and it is gone. Then you have the gasoline engine working with extra weight.
For me , driving most of the times 200-300 kms, means using gasoline at 10-12 liters/km most of the time instead of efficient diesel (and clean with adblue) using 7,5 liters/km.
It is a non brainer. X3 30e for me it is just publicity but totally useless. Happy with my 30D.

I had a X5 40e for about 6 months and it was a lovely car when the batteries were helping to power it. Sadly this was only for about 15-19 miles and then it was a 2.0 petrol engine in an X5 with a load of batteries in the boot. It was awful with no electric power. When working together it was lovely.
I just did too many miles (15,000 per year) to make it work really but it was a lovely car and certainly didn't put me off hybrid/electric I just chose the wrong option at the time. Maybe in the future.
That said I have just ordered a M40i so sensible choices aren't what I go for with cars to be fair.

The X3 has been out for a good while now and it's odd that the PHEV is about a half year away.
It shouldn't be so difficult for BMW to release a popular PHEV faster than this.
Mitsubishi became popular here in Sweden because of their Outlander PHEV, earlier they were obsolete.

I wonder for how long the car manufacturers are going to keep pushing for 10-12 kwh in PHEV, it should be way more.
Also hope there will be a performance oriented model with a I-6 like in the new X5.
