That kind of makes sense as the car supposedly just had rotors and pads replaced; my guess is that just the rear ones were done as they look clean.

I always spend the few extra $ and get coated rotors. I recommend putting some anti-seize where the rotor touches the rim so the rim doesn't get stuck on the rotor, especially if you live in the salt belt.

I'll know in the future when it's time for new brakes. There are a few specialty BMW shops in the area. I'm due to have my oil changed and oil filter checked for metal particles in a month or two. While I'm there I'll have them check out the brake situation as well.

A can of brake clean and a wire brush will go a long way to make it look better.
Be sure to wear gloves and a mask. My stoptech rotors came coated and painted, the black instead of silver hub looks much better especially on a black wheel.

Painted mine black with POR-15. I live in a winter state and have had no problems with rust.

I like to use high temp Rustoleum silver when not using painted or zinc coated rotors. It holds up well on the rotor hat, calipers and caliper brackets. you could clean those up and spray them.
