While the ID7 system may be better (once you get the hang of it), the current gauge cluster looks better with ID6.

Aren't the gauges for M models configurable in two ways. One for the traditional view that all bimmers get and the second being the two verticle tachometers. I thought all M cars get the double tach, is it just the M8?

I've driven a few BMWs as rentals with the new Idrive 7 and it's basically useless while driving. To much clutter in the instrument panel to get any useful information while driving in traffic. It's a great system if you're parked!

Last autumn, the iDrive system in BMW X3 G01 and X4 G02 was brought to the current OS 7.0 without much ado, and now the M models F97 and F98 are following: From April 2020, the power SUV BMW X3 M and X4 M a major infotainment update. As with the 5 Series, the facelift is not waited for, instead the changeover is carried out without any noticeable changes as a model maintenance measure with the new model year.

In addition to the new iDrive technology on the infotainment display, the change to OS 7.0 also means a new look for the instrument display. We can already guess what the display behind the steering wheel will look like from the example of the big brothers X5 M and X6 M. Our little graphic gimmick already shows the displays there with the logo of the BMW X3 M, because apart from the model designation, the X3 M and X4 M are likely to continue to use the digital speedometers of the big brothers. It remains to be seen whether the two power SUVs will also receive the new M setup logic that was introduced with the M8.

The objectively more important changes, however, take place on the central infotainment display, where the BMW Live Cockpit ConnectedDrive ensures that the tile design of the previously installed system is abandoned. Also completely new is the voice control, which can be activated with the push of a button using "Hey BMW". The activation word BMW can also be replaced by any other word if the driver would like to address the digital assistant with a different name.

Various pads with live content can be placed relatively freely on the large infotainment display, so that each customer can adapt the system to their own preferences. Just like before, all functions can be controlled both by iDrive controller and by touching the touch screen. Gesture control is also available for some other functions, which works with simple hand movements in the area in front of the display.
Anyone know if this will be available as an update to the 2020 M models? Maybe via software update?

Or only on newly purchased models after April?
It's already changed to iDrive 7 on the 2020 M5 Comp.

There is some customization via bimmercode (Alpina display is peachy). Besides, who ever looks at the center display anyway? I use the HUD and the nav display w/ Waze on it. All the instrument cluster serves is to show me how much gas I have and what song is playing.
Corn18, could you post a picture of the alpina display for ID7? I have the alpina gauges in my m550 (bimmercode) and they are great! Thanks.

Yuck. Hopefully the M8 cockpit cluster can be coded to replace this abomination of a cluster display.

For everyone saying how bad this display is I have a question. Do most opt for HUD as well? If so, how frequently do you actually look at the actual "gauge" cluster? I have had HUD since 2012 and the only time I look to the cluster for anything is fuel or messages. Do you all not utilize the HUD as much? Don't opt for it? The new display is cleaner, crisper and I feel a huge upgrade over the largely dated old cluster. My opinion obviously. Definitely a lot easier to keep clean!

Power on, pre startup:

After startup, adaptive mode (comfort is the same) w/ MPG display on right. I also have the middle map disabled via menu setting (I hate the clutter). The map still shows up in the hud for turn by turn nav.

Sport Plus

Eco Pro

Different stuff on right (selectable with the B/C button)

I never look at the center display except to check the gas or what song is playing.

For technology at least, maybe not recently, but iDrive in general is one of the best infotainment systems available and BMW has introduced a bunch of features that other cars now use not just infotainment as well, although like I said, not recently, but when it comes to tech, yes.

You are dreaming.

A 2009 Toyota had a better NAV System than the 2009ish CIC or 2013ish NBT. BMW only beat the 2009 Toyota with the NBT EVO in 2015-2016.

And let's not forget it took BMW until the 2nd half of 2017 get a 6WB (optional) for the F30 series and never for the F80s. About half a Decade after other brands.

BMW a Pioneer....lol....that's the best joke this week.

Pioneer does not refer to how good something was, to which I never said the first iDrive was good, but to being the first. BMW when it comes to tech, not just infotainment, but engine tech, controls, etc. Has been at least in the past, one of the first when it comes to certain things. I said in my post that they aren't now or recently, but they were definitely pioneers in the past specifically the 90's and 00's.

Once BMW ditched the one button iDrive to individual shortcut buttons with CIC, they jumped ahead of infotainment and haven't looked back since.

But I'm one of those people who despised gen-one and while people still hated when BMW releases CIC, I loved it and never found it hard to use. BMW is a leader in infotainment and I don't think many, if any, systems come close. MBUX was a much needed upgrade but it's more flash than functionality.

That backwards tach and and speedometer is awful. Why wouldn't they just rotate each 90 degrees so the increase happens left to right (like every other car in history) instead in a semicircle? Especially for an M model where the tach should be more prominent and important.
