Nail in my tire. Who to fix?

Well I have a nail in my tire

It’s pretty much dead center. Should be repairable.

What do you guys advise? Usually I go to discount they always took mostly good care of previous vehicles but this is my first BMW. In the past they crunched a side skirt on my SRT Jeep and stripped a stud. No doubt they damaged my rims over time too. But they paid for the side skirt to be replaced and the stud. I would prefer no damage occurs from whoever I take it too

Is this something I should take to a bmw service center? Will they do a better job? Is it free like discount? Will they take walk ins like Doscount?

Also does anyone know if our vehicles are safe to be lifted with the lifts that discount uses or do we need floor jacks?

Thanks in advance and tell me if I’m being overly paranoid lol.

BMW dealers by policy will not patch a tire no matter where the nail is (though some dealers may in really rare cases). 100% will bet you that if you called one or went to one for a patch not only will they say they don't do that but they will say that "we cannot repair runflats". You read that right. Service advisors either have no clue that M cars don't have runflats or they say that to hope you are an idiot and pay for a new tire. This has happened to me multiple times and the experience is always the same.

Any discount tire shop that can do a patch will work. I usually just stand there and watch them - that usually makes them more careful. I would suggest going to a chain discount tire shop, they are usually a bit better with more expensive cars.

Plug/patch. The tire has to come off of the wheel.

Roll to Discount man, they will fix it if it's in the middle of the contact patch. If it were close to the sidewall, maybe not.

You should be fine considering they aren't run flats. Be sure they are kind to your wheel!

I just called he closest dealer and they said they do it for $40. I asked if it’s any better than having discount do it, if they take extra care to not damage things and he basically said no. It’s the same it’s just a bmw tech instead of some kid at discount. Seems like a crapshoot. Discount is more convenient so I will probably just go there unless others have opinions. The guy at discount said that they would need extra time so they can be extra careful and said these tires are difficult. I have the continentals.

Glad it’s repairable just hate having my new car go under the knife already

Ha, yeah. I'm headed to MB Westminster. I have a PDR guy there so hopefully I can get it taken care of quick.

Don't go to the Discount on Colorado Blvd if you are close. Those guys wrecked my wife's wheels a few years back.

Ask them to use the "touch-less" tire tool thing (they have two different tools in my area) and make sure they are using a torque wrench. Also bring them a jack pad and make sure they use it.. they'll just jack it up without using one. And do plug AND patch. Just note the speed rating for the tire will go down a bit.

Yeah I go to the one here in castle rock. Like I said before they have not been flawless but they always own any mistakes or damage they cause so I guess that’s better than just giving me the finger.

Good luck with the PDR!

When you say use a torque wrench do you mean for taking all lugs off and on? Or just to be sure they torque them after?

Ive seen some use air tools to secure them at probably 150ftlbs...

It should be at 103ftlbs for our cars. They typically do 100ftlbs at Discount which is fine -just ask. I mean just make sure they are not over torque-ing it. Also see if they use a protective socket and dont scratch the wheels

I had to put 10 psi twice last month in my right front tire and made an appointment at my dealer to get the tire looked over and a software update. Ended up I had two nails in my non comp PZ4 tire and decided to have it replaced. Dealer didn't have it handy so I took my first road trip to Tire Rack to get a tire and bring it back for the dealer to install. Here's a pic of their test track but they didn't let me on it. 😂

Nice! That's lucky the dealer will do it. I think you couldn't go wrong either way and agree with what others have said.

Not sure if you can, but I typically only bring the wheel/tires of my vehicles to have them repaired.

It lessens the chance of wheel scratches/car damage/incorrect torquing.

I just take the tire off and throw it in my SUV. Keep the car on the jack or spare until it is repaired and throw it back on.

Just had a screw that was too close to the sidewall to be repaired (1400 miles). Grrr..

Well, for me...
I bust out my tire patch kit, and get it done.
That's why non-RFT doesn't bother me, I always carry.

I have the 6.99 slime tire plug kit from Walmart , if you rotate the tire properly you can plug it without even removing it off the rim these plugs will outlast any tire even in run flat tires

I've actually used this too on my old car, but was concerned about higher speeds. Honestly it worked well and never leaked, but i never went over 120 after. Maybe even that was too fast 🤣

Discount took care of it today and it appears I came out unscathed. I did have them double check that they torqued the locking lug as they usually skip that process and I have lost many locks (at their expense). It was not torqued...overall glad it’s taken care of.

Some good suggestions. I like the idea of just bringing the one wheel to them. I’m not really setup to do that at the moment though.

Just had a rear tire with 2 patches needed. Took the wheel into America Tire Depot. Have done business with them before and they patched it for free, which was cool.

Patched track tires in the past and went about 150 mph. Never ever had an issue with a plug
