2 day review. X3M Competition vs F90M5 vs X5M vs TTS

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Picked it up yesterday. Black on Black. Drove it on the Interstate, back roads, etc, etc.

Sold my F85X5M in 2018. Bought the F90M5 and kept it until June 2019. Bought the TTS in March 2019. So all were around recently.

X5M went 12.2 at 114mph stock. 11.8 at 117mph RC.

F90M5 went 11.2 at 125mph stock. 10.8 at 130mph RC.

TTS goes 10.4 at 131mph stock.

Per IND the X3M Comp stock will go 11.8 at 116mph...to be tested here.

X3M is very interesting. It's not the "little brother" to the X5M. It is the little brother to the F90M5.

The X5M is much more visceral than the X3M. If you like the "feeling" of speed and acceleration you will like the X5M better even though the X3M is faster/quicker. That is the same reason I sold the F90M5. IT IS A GREAT OVERACHIEVER. Loved the F90M5 overall. But the TTS, only 0.40 seconds quicker, is MUCH more visceral than the F90. It feels twice as fast, even though it is not.

Same with the X3M. It is as quiet at cruise as the F90M5. Extremely comfortable. But you do not get the noise, vibration , etc when accelerating. BUT IT IS F A S T.

Handling wise, the X3M kills the X5M. MUCH more balanced. Tech is greatly improved also. Pretty much the F90M5 Tech, with the same steering wheel, shifter, seat look, etc. A F90M5 SAV basically with a bit less power (11.2 vs 11.8 Time for a RaceChip)

Stock vs Stock the X3M exhaust sounds slightly better than the X5M. Modded, the X5M will kill anything you do to the X3M. V8 Twin Turbo Rules the exhaust mods.

Ride wise, to me, the F90M5 was slightly stiffer than the F85X5M....not enough to matter,,,rode well. The X3M with Michelins at factory spec rides as well as the F90M5 in Comfort. ZERO issues there. But our roads are decent. Expansion joints and occasional potholes are fine. Not as soft as the F85X5M, but fine.

Turbo Lag....this will be debated for a while here. Is it Turbo Lag or are you used to V8 TT tip in Torque that hits fast ??? Tip in Torque was Instantaneous in the F85X5M and the F90M5 due to the V8's hitting hard/quick. I drove an X5 35i down to pick up the X3M. Totally different feel in tip in Torque vs a V8TT. So, for me, the X3M does not have true Turbo Lag.....it's comes down to what you are used to and are expecting......

Overall, the X3M Competition is a WINNER.

Congratulations onfireX5 - looks great! Thanks for sharing initial thoughts, and appreciate the view w/o the moon roof.

Look forward to you placing it on your scales as that'll be the first time we get an idea of the moon roof's and spare's weight (assuming you don't have that) in comparison to IND's build.

A few more miles to get the tank to 1/2 like IND and it goes onto the race scales. No SunRoof. No Spare tire. Hoping for 4450lbs....or less..... F90 was low 43xx

Here's a rough idea of fuel weight based on the gauge. This is gonna be interesting - thanks again for offering to weigh on your scales.

@onfireX5 With all the complaints I read on this forum about turbo lag on the X3MC are these as exaggerated as they were with the M4 when it was released? I absolutely love the brute force and feel little to no turbo lag in my 2015 M4 pure stock no mods. Does the S55 engine and S58 handle the same and similar in driving?

You have just described the difference between a hard hitting V8TT and a well designed 6cylTT. My TTS is a flat 6 TT and has zero lag also.

Yep it's crazy how much people complained about the S55 in the M4 when it was first released. The turbo lag, exhaust note, to stiff of a suspension for daily driving, horrible gas mileage for an I6 TT versus C63 v8 TT etc. I absolutely love my M4 and if the X3MC handles and performs like an M4 that's a real winner to me.

Meant to add - my estimate will be minus 112 lbs for the roof, minus 30 lbs for the spare, so that's 142 lbs off. You have DA pkg, don't know what that adds on top of IND's model, so will guess 15 lbs. So I'll go out on a limb and guess 127 lbs difference (+/- as gas wt will be an estimate), so 4,383 lbs.

Nice write up! Thanks for sharing and for planning to get a weight check. I'm gonna hazard a guess of 180 lbs less weight in your rig compared to the IND car.

Hi,
Out of interest - what exact model of Audi TT do you have?
Is it a 2019 TTS or 2019 TTRS?
Reason I ask is that the TTS has a four cylinder turbo engine and the TTRS has a 5 cylinder turbo.
Neither have a flat 6 TT
Cheers
Steve

made the same mistake, and I was like "how the hell an Audi TT with 306 Hp can be quicker than the M5 comp.

I personally felt that my 991 TTS was actually slower than the f90 m5 due to the low end torque.

Tip in Torque is higher in the F90M5 and will feel quicker at tip in. But actual testing with my 2019 TTS and F90M5 plus a friend has a TTS and a M5 Comp show the same results. Pure stock a 2019 TTS runs 10.4 at 131mph consistently. F90M5 11.1 to 11.2 at 125-126mph. Comp 10.8 to 10.9 This is four different cars so is pretty accurate.
