USB Inlets in the glove box?

I just got my X3 2.8i yesterday - AWESOME drive!!! I have a question though - I see there is a USB inlet for ipod in the center console but I don't have one inside the glove box.... I am just wondering if the USB inlet inside the glove box is an option thing that comes with optional package or should it be a standard device that comes with all X3 sold in USA...

If it is a standard one... then I have a problem since something is missing!!!

Yeah, I was told it was standard too. But it's not. Nav only.

So this brings me the next question, so the people with nav package, get 2 usb inlets ? like one on the glove box and another on the center console, just trying to understand what comes and what not...bcos these things are not clearly mentioned anywhere.

Yes, the one in the glove box is only used for importing music to the internal HDD and i think for software updates.

The other one in the arm rest is for iPhone/iPod/other mp3 player or USB with music or other phone. You can import and listen simultaneously using both USB ports

Both USB ports connect to the 12gig hard drive. Someone needs to follow those cords and find out where they are hiding that drive

Would be sweet if that could be changed to something much larger...someone will eventually figure it out.

You can plug in a flash drive and play mp3 files directly. The player will recognize a drive that's formatted in FAT16 or FAT32 and will show, at least, one level of folders. It will also recognize mp3 tags, so you can name songs, artists, and tracks and the names will be displayed (not just "Track-1, Track-2, etc.).

The radio front panel button will only switch between the CD player and the radio. You have to go to the iDrive and select multimedia to see a plugged-in flash drive. I've loaded hundreds of pieces of music on a drive at 256 kbits/sec. and all play perfectly.

It is also supposed to work with some MP3 players, but not with an iPhone or iPod. For those you can use the 3mm analog audio-in jack next to the USB port

My only complaint is that I have to unload the sunglasses, cellphone charger, mini-flashlight and the other junk I usually carry in the center console to get at the USB port. Why they didn't put it in back of the little storage tray just in front of the cup holders is beyond me.

Actually, in your case, you can't. My post comments were for the 49-state and worldwide "basic" USB port. I believe it's disabled in the North Carolina market vehicles. Something about USB being too complicated for Tar Heel fans.

Maybe if you sign a waver and certify that you can spell "USB", BMW will give you a special dispensation.

The non-US readers of this diverted thread must think we're nuts.

iPhone integration is actually standard now. You use a Y adapter (included) and interface via idrive.

In the US, the Y adapter is standard. Your CA should have given it to you with your keys and manual. It's free. Don't let them try to charge you for it.

You get album artwork when playing from a flash drive but if you import the same files you don't see the artwork when playing from the internal HDD. Lame.
