xDrive 30i - Vibration at idle

Recently purchased a 2018 X3 xDrive 30i with 41K miles on it. While the engine runs smoothly, the engine vibration at idle is noticeable. I've test-driven a few X3s before purchasing mine to know this is a common characteristic of X3. Mine is not more noticeable than other X3s but it's there. I feel the Auto Start Stop is the main culprit to blame this on.

Curious if you feel the same vibration at idle in your X3? I am tempted to replace the engine mounts but it's not a common part to replace on this car.

I don't own a 30i... but I do have an M40i and a family member has the 30i... the engine vibration is SIGNIFICANTLY higher in the 4 cylinder vs the 6... to the point where whenever I drive it, I notice it and point it out immediately. Another family member has a Q5... that is also a 4 cylinder and it also has less vibration than the 30i... not sure, but it may be a B48 4 cylinder characteristic.

Put your car in sport mode and see if it's there... or turn off auto start stop to isolate that issue.

X3 M40d, and despite being diesel there's no noticeable vibration at idle.

It's also got the 48V MHEV tech, so auto start/stop is also pretty seamless.

Whatever issue is occuring in the OP's vehicle, it is either a specific issue with that vehicle or it has been resolved for 2024. There is no idle vibration/powertrain sound in my vehicle to the point that I've had more than one passenger at a stoplight ask if the car was running (yes, I do have ASS deactivated for every drive.). I would have the motor mounts inspected, OP. The fluid-filled mounts failed on my 2 Series at 21k miles and on my wife's MINI Countryman (shared BMW platform and motor) at 18k miles.

Motor mounts on the 30i are a quickly worn part. I wouldn’t be surprised even at such low mileage if they are done. Mine idles smooth for a 4 pot, much better than the old N20 engine did (which felt like an old diesel).

I also have a 2018 30i Xdrive B46 4 cylinder with 32k on the odometer and ther is no noticeable vibration at idle or otherwise. Maybe like bocabimmer said, maybe motor mounts . Turn off the auto start stop ,or just code it to start in sport individual with BimmerCode .

There's no vibration at idle in my '24 either. I leave the ASS on and there a is brief vibration when the engine starts but it's just momentary. In fact, it was the same with my '19 before this one. It sounds like the engine mounts might be the culprit in the OP's X3.

four cylinder engine mount failures

I just replaced my engine mounts on my 2019 X3 3.0 with just 25,000 miles. I am told this is a fairly common problem for four cylinder BMWs of this era. My extended warranty would not cover the repair (for some reason, engine mounts were not included in the "platinum" package. I am out $2,500 and am not happy about it. I am told by two techs that this is a known problem but that BMW won't do a soft recall. Thoughts.

BMW won’t do anything until legal action chatted starts to become a thing. I wonder what the qualifications for class action status are?

Wait? $2,500 to replace engines mounts? How many engine mounts are in our car?

I’m unsure of how the BMW engine components are positioned within the engine bay etc, but if you were to change the engine mounts, wouldn’t you have to change the transmission mounts as well so all the vibrations/harmonics etc are equal? Or doesn’t that matter as the mounts will cater for that by design?

What were the symptoms for you to bring it into them ? Vibration at certain speeds ?? Or something else ?
