21 X3MC rear tires wore significantly faster than fronts

My Conti OEM rear tires are almost toast with 16.5k miles, but the fronts seem less than half worn.

I know the diff biases power to the rear, but I was shocked at the difference.

They also seem to have worn significantly more on the center tread than the outer, despite being diligent with pressure.

Oh well - have the P4S 295's sitting ready to me mounted.

Just curious if others have had similar wear observations.

My 2020 X3MC had conti's and the rears wore down at 16k also. The fronts got about 3000 more miles out of them…replaced them all with MICHELIN PS4..seemed to have better grip.

To get 16k out of the Continentals is pretty good. Clearly they just made the compound super soft to get the star spec rating/compete with the performance of the Michelin. Horrible tires.

I'm glad the dealership replaced my conti's with Hankook. After hearing how bad they are, I am glad I wont have to deal with them.

Two things acting to wear rear tires out faster and added center wear.

BMW; X3MC

Quote:
The electronically controlled M xDrive, which works in tandem with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, only shifts drive to the front axle when the rear wheels start to lose optimum traction.
Continental; Center Wear

Quote:
This wear pattern is found on driven wheels of highly motorised vehicles. Even today’s mid-range cars have modern engines generating high levels of torque and capable of producing high degrees of slip. These high torque levels, during strong acceleration or in stop-start urban traffic, or when accelerating away from traffic lights, can quickly increase wear of the tread centre.

Like other said, it is a rear wheel drive bias car until it needs the fronts to kick in via the differential. I would expect the rears to wear faster, especially not being able to rotate front to back

A good rule of thumb is the fronts will last ~2x the rears.

Good if you have a tire brand you like, but if you want to change and match you end up replacing the semi-good fronts as well.

I went through this with my E46 M3 - had the contis but couldn't justify replacing the perfectly good fronts so went with another set of contis for the rear.

When my X3MC needs new rears, I will be going with PS4S all around.

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm actually a BMW CCA HPDE instructor & my track car is 2018 Z06 with Pirelli slicks.

Even my Cup 2 street tires on the Z06 do not wear at such different rates front to rear.

I was just surprised.

Cue the tire guy recommending you purchase a set of 4 to prevent wear on the center diff

Conti's on my 2020 rear's were toast in 1200 miles.

on the 22 I decided to remove them and sell them immediately. Sold them for $400 (all 4)

I had 2 clients that have seen premature wear in 700 miles on their 22 X3M's.

WTH!?

Did you do burn-outs and doughnuts?

Either that or those must be defective tires assuming normal road driving. How did the front look?

I’d be curious to see your new tires at 1200 miles. That tire definitely does not look like normal wear and tear.
