I'm 99% sure. It was a 2020 model that recently arrived to the dealership (still had white plastic covering all over body and interior cardboard and plastic protectors) with the new galvanic buttons, ID7, Live Cockpit Professional, etc.
I have a 2020 M40i and can confirm the exhaust note and pops and burbles are completely different. It is nowhere near the same aggressive level as 2018-2019. I have a thread on this. I'm disappointed in the noise change

What is the “custom configurator” or do you mean bootmod?

Not sure what you're asking. The config option is a menu within the Bootmod3 software.

Awaiting for BM3 to release their 2020 X3 M40i product. Mainly to be able to customize burbles and such.

most of the burble and pop happens when you let off the gas pedal, when you do that on any car a bit of un-detonated fuel makes its way into the exhaust system but normal cars and this one when its turned off or in non sport mode, recirculates this back into the intake. yes you are wasting a very tiny amount of fuel when its making noise. also it would mean a small amount of extra emission is making its way out. Personally I love a quiet car, but like I do with an ugly dog, I can't help but love it.

You can tone it down a bit by coding ASD off.
